Sorry for the question and i know it must be answered somewhere else before but i can't get it right using the search feature.
Okay, i have downloaded the firmware upgrade for my Sony DVD-RW drive and i am asked to disable the DMA mode for my DVD-RW drive before applying the upgrade. I am asked to read the windows help and support to do so but can't find it there.
So any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

To disable DMA in Windows 2000 or XP:
1.
Right-click My Computer and select Properties.
2.
Select the Hardware tab when the systems properties window appears.
3.
In the Hardware tab, select the Device Manager button.
4.
Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers to expand the options.
5.
Under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, double-click on the listing to bring up the property dialog box for the Primary IDE channel.
6.
Click on the Advanced settings tab.
7.
Note: If you do not have an advanced settings tab, you may have a vendor accelerator software
8.
package installed. Check Start>Programs for “Intel Application Accelerator” or similar program and remove using the “Add/Remove Programs” Control Panel.
9.
If available, set Transfer Mode for Device 0 and 1 to No DMA. Then select OK.
10.
Your computer asks if you would like to reboot at this point. Select NO.
11.
Repeat steps 5–8 for the Secondary IDE channel.
12.
This time, when you are prompted, select Reboot.
13.
If DMA was disabled in order to flash the firmware on your drive, use this procedure to enable DMA -
Thanks for the reply, i did just exactly you said, but there is no option saying "No DMA", the one which is selected is "DMA if Available" and the second option is "PIO Only".Do i change it to "PIO Only"?
Another thing i want to ask is that in IDE ATA?ATAPI controllers tab there are two Primary IDE Channel and two Secondary IDE Channel installed.Should i disable DMA for all of them are only for one primary and secondary? If yes then which one? My DVD-RW drive is slave.
Thanks for any reply

I wouldn't flash your drive with these kinds of questions, just not worth it & any change you get from new FW is going to be small.

Usually the firmware update will do all the work. I recommend updating the firmware. It will allow you to use newer discs.
You have to do nothing though while the firmware is updating or you will destroy your drive.Believing yourself to be secure only takes one cracker to dispel your belief. -
Does anyone know a utility that will show which DVD or CD is attached to which CONTROLLER?
figuring this out without opening the case has been the bane of my existence
It doesn't help that IDE CONTOLLERS CAN BE LABELLED
ZERO and ONE as oppesed to ONE and TWO
How generic can you get :-(

View Devices by CONNECTION indeed!
Thanks All
Now I need to figgure out why the CONNECTIONS show my DVD drive on the opposite CONTROLLER from what the INTEL APPLICATION accaelerator shows!
It appears from opening the box, the INTEL APP is wrong -

Gee Sorry..
I thought sohaibrazzaq had concluded that he now could disable DMA.. so I asked a related question on how to see which DMA button is controlling which device..
So go somewhere else Dv8ted2 and disturb another discussion with this talk of hijacking
again ...I thought it was on topic. so sorry -
sohaibrazzaq,
There are clear benefits to updating the firmware. If I were you, I would do the frmware update. I would not worry about disabling DMA.Believing yourself to be secure only takes one cracker to dispel your belief. -
Thank you all guys for the replies, i know have enough idea how to do it.
@Dv8ted2
I Will do it know surely.
Cheers,
