LiteOn 2001 too old for DVD+R DL?

If anyone else still has their LiteOn 2001, have you had any luck getting it to play DVD+R DL?

Using Verbatim DVD+R DL (and no sticky labels) I have tried:
ISO and burning ISO w/DVD Decrypter
using my HP DVD740 (which, btw does not support bitsetting so I thought at first, maybe that was the problem)

Also used the same method with my Plextor 740A (once using it's regular firmware and then again w/it flashed to BenQ 1640) bitsetting as DVD Rom.

Those DVDs WILL play in my Philips 642, np. The LiteOn however claims there is no disc.

Then I tried burning some of my DivX avis as DL data discs.
I tried burning with both Nero and RecordNow Deluxe on both my Plextor and my HP.
Again, those discs will play fine in my Philips 642 but not my LiteOn.

Is my LiteOn just too old or have I missed something?

Well I unpacked my player from the box a couple of days ago when I got my HDTV. Firmware was 22 in the end. Tested a Verbatim 2.4 X DVD +R DL. Bookmarked as dvd-rom. Well just tested it and it worked. Tested some xvids and some didnt work. Maybe its the 5.1 sound well I have to do some more testing about that one. Well I'm going to flash the firmare in liteon. Its been in the box for a long time.. But I guess that there must be better dvd players out there that can play x-vid and do a upconversion.

The picture was just too sweet to be true.

I must be doing something wrong but danged if I know what it could be.

My LiteOn 2001 has no problems playing retail DLs, np playing DivX and XviD (and ac3) on single layer DVDRs (well except for DivX 3 but it always choked on those). It just won't do a thing with DVD+R DLs either as movies or data discs
