Not sure if this is the right forum but I had a question. From time to time I've had dvds that played fine but all of a sudden would not copy onto my computer(no scratches) In most cases they were origianaly burned on a stand-alone burner. And not just my stand-alone but others as well. When transfering stuff for me I usually just use DVD-rws & put it on my computer(gotta do it quick, after a few weeks it may not copy) & reauthor it.
Which brings me to something else- One of my dvd-rws worked on my stand-alone fine until I used it on my computer than erased it, now my stand-alone says it's unusable.
So I guess my question is- do computers & stand-alone burners work in different ways that make them not real compatable? Thanks

Not all stand alone DVD recorders work or rather burn as well as others. So in the end the problem is always the stand alone DVD recorder and/or the media rather than the computer burner being the problem.

  3. I had a case when DVD-RW erased in Nero 6 became "unusable" for Nero 5. Which mean erasing is realy different. Try it erasing somewhere else.

Most DVDs become unreadable when you glue a round paper CD label un them.
    Cann't tell it's possible don't tell anything.

I use DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn to erase my DVD-RW discs and I always use FULL ERASE and have never had a problem.

I have 5 DVD-RW discs that I have used heavily since August 2005 to transfer recordings from my stand alone DVD recorder to my computer and each time I do a FULL ERASE as I said above and these 5 DVD-RW discs are still working well after all these months and I use them very heavily as I record a lot of TV shows.

My stand alone DVD recorder keeps tracks of each disc I burn and I am up to just over 100 and I rotate my 5 DVD-RW discs which means I've burned and erased each DVD-RW at least 25 times now. They are still going strong.

Well I do have a lowend recorder that's for sure(cyberhome) But I've had lots of problems copieing discs that were done on other peoples stand-alone. No scratches, play fine the computer just won't read them. I havn't had this problem with computer authored discs

Some stand alone DVD recorders are known to create/burn DVD discs that can be problematic for computer DVD burners.

Cyberhome is notorious for this and even a big name brand ... Panasonic ... can do this sometimes.

Also recording in "VR" mode instead of "DVD Video" mode can cause problems. Never ever use "VR" mode!

Last but not least it could be a media problem OR it the problem is mostly with DVD-RW or DVD+RW then it could be the way you are erasing the discs in between each use.

Well I'm not sure what vr is but my stand alone will only burn dvd+r(my computer will do both) As far as erasing goes it's only a problem if I use the disc in my computer & than try it in my stand-alone
I've actally worked out a system that works for me. First I keep my dvd-rw seperate)computer & other), And when i transfer I just put it right on my computer & edit from there. I just think it's weird that there is sometimes a problem between the two.
But, my recorder was only 99 bucks & as an added bonus it plays PAL discs!! So I can't complain
