    Most of the good DL burners do not exceed about $50. these days, if you shop around. That would be NEC or Pioneer OEM burners, or the retail boxed Lite-Ons. An exception is Plextor, which is more like twice that price, and I think retail-box only. I haven't seen any of these already sold *as* externals, but you can turn any of them into a USB or firewire external with the addition of a "drive shell" (drive housing kit), which has everything you need, for about an extra $30. The ones I've bought most often are the Coolmax 510 and 310 (509 / 309 ? -- they've changed the numbers at least once). These are good quality aluminum, rather than plastic, and more rugged than most, though this makes them a bit heavier. The 5__ series includes a fan, and is suitable for either a hard drive or an optical drive. Great portability option for travel, or shuttling between different computers.

    I would go the "build your own" external drive route. I like the Benq 1620 & 1650 DL burners and newegg has several external cases to choose from...
