According to my motherboard manual, the 4 SATA ports of my motherbaord which are Silicon Image (Sil 3114) support hot plug. However, I can never get this to work. I cant connect any hard drives (ive tried 3 different SATA HDD's; WD, Maxtor and Seagate) while the PC is on. I have to shut down the PC then connect the hard drive and reboot.
Does anyone know how i can enable hot plug functionality?
Thanks.

It should be automatic. After your last round of problems with this controller, I checked and I have the same one (thought I had a 3112). Anyway, it does say you have to plug in the SATA cable first, then the power. You may have to go into Disk Management and assign it a drive letter also.
It is possible, but unlikely in my opinion, that this may be a function only available in RAID setups. It doesn't say in the tech docs I found, but it does have the word array, which I usually take to mean RAID is involved. -
Just heard back from Asus Technical Support. According to them, Hot Plug is only supported with SATA2 Controller and not SATA1. Is anyone able to use Hot Plug with their SATA1 Controller?
