    Hello,

I have a Hauppauge PVR 150MCE. I know that this card has a hardware mpeg2 encoder. I want to edit my old analog home videos. I have a minidv camera and am using the analog passthru on that to get my video into my computer. After I edit my video I would like to compress to mpeg2 to put onto DVD. Instead of using software compression (i.e. TmpgEnc) is there some way to use the encoder on the Hauppauge to encode?

I thought of feeding my video out to my minidv cam via firewire and then feeding it into the hauppauge card from my camcorder's analog outs.......however I want a more "digital" solution. Is there some sort of software that will encode the Dv files to mpeg2 using the hauppauge chip instead of my processor?

    Thanks,

I would recommend staying with the software convertion from DV avi to mpeg2 BUT I would use CCE Basic ($60). It does a great job of converting and it is much faster than TmpgEnc. I think this will give you a better result than the 150, the 150 is good but I think you will do better with CCE Basic.

I'll give CCE a shot. Thanks bits.

Just wondering though, in theory the following method should work:

    1) edit DV avi files on pc and put them back to DV tape.
    2) Run RCA cables from the dv cam into the hauppauge
    3) Use capture software to capture mpeg2 from the haupppauge

This method should allow me to convert my DV avi to Mpeg2? Would the loss in quality be too great?

    Thanks

Yes, that will work. But the extra digital-to-analog, and then analog-to-digital conversions will lose some quality. And a good software MPEG conversion can give better quality than a realtime hardware compression. You'll have to decide for yourself if the losses are acceptable. Try using an s-video cable rather than composite if you can.

Does the Hauppauge 150 come with DVD authoring software? My USB2 PVR came with uLead DVD Movie Factory, which, IIRC, can take DV as its source.

Yes that will work and can even get you pretty good results.
Just AVOID the RCA/Composite connection with the Hauppauge!!
Use the S-Video connection, this will give much better results.
The composite inputs of the Hauppauge 150/500 are pretty bad.

If you are in for a challenge you can also try output DV from your computer to your camcorder and DIRECTLY capturing the outputted analog video again with your Hauppauge card. 8)
