Convert rm to mp3?

I have just downloaded the lattest ffmpegx and installed the stable reallib file and yet when I place a rm file into the application mplayer freezes up. When I force quit mplayer and try to convert it takes one second and produces a 0 KB mp3 file.

What do I need to do to get it to work?

Only video+audio rm files are supported, through use of mencoder engine.

It is a video+audio rm file that I am trying to convert and I have instaled the mencoder engine along with the mplayer engine.

That is why I do not know why it is not working and what is suppose to happen.

The destination must also be video + audio, mp3 only will not work. You may use "DivX mencoder" preset for example.

Thank you very much for your help and quick replys. I was able to convert it to an avi and then extract the audio track and convert it to an mp3. Once again thanks for your help.
