  1. Hey Everyone,

i did something stupid the other day, i didnt read the instructions and plugged in and turned on a USB printer before installing drivers.

Now whenever i am trying to get the printer working it comes up with an unkown device message, even though i have gone through and removed the drivers and started over again its still giving me the um sheets.

its a canon 4200, anyone got any ideas on what is stopping this thing from working?

Kind of obvious, but did you unplug the printer, remove any installed drivers? Reboot the computer, install drivers then plug it in?

I usually have the opposite problem. Until I plug my printer in, I can't install a driver.

If you don't get any results, plug it in, go to Control Panel>Device Manager>USB and try 'Scan for Hardware Changes'. If you get nowhere, then uninstall the USB channel and try again. Make sure no other USB devices are plugged in while you do all this. Reboot.

Sometimes XP can get cranky installing drivers. Look around on your printer install disc and see if you can locate the driver. XP wants a .inf file usually.

If you are using XP? No computer info = no useful advice. Or do you have a Mac?

Anyway, that's some of the methods I would try. Not sure how Canon installs.
