"Region free" hacks independent of firmware upgrades?

I have a Philips DVDR3330H that I would like to make region-free.
There is a nice hack in

but I am worried if these kind of hacks will generally be safe to do (can they "break" the machine), and if they are unaffected by firmware upgrades. That is: can a hack that worked with one firmware version be expected to work with a later version? And can a hack "survice" a firmware upgrade (or will I have to reapply the hack)?

The hack you linked to accesses a "secret" feature of the DVD player that was put there by the manufacturer. I would venture that it's perfectly safe or it wouldn't be there at all.

Will it survive an upgrade? Possibly not, it's the kind of thing that could be eliminated in an updated firmware version.

You mentioned upgrade. I think we've had an upgrade of the DVDR3330H. Does anyone have a new code? The one published in Feb 2006 does not work anymore.
I have always "region freed" my DVDs I bought, and I hope this one is no exception. My kids love their australian shows, and I would hate not to be able to show them anymore.
