I am getting ready to get a new DVD player and I was wondering if I could get some recommendations from you guys and any feedback on related players you may own. I have read thru the player guide, but I was really looking to get some personal recommendations.

What I really want is a player that is capable of both PAL and NTSC discs, SVCD and DivX capable would be great too.

If any of you have a moment to give me the skinny on your player, I would appreciate it.

Also thanks for all the great info over the years. I have been reading this site for quite some time.

I'm sure the Oppo player is great, but you'll have to decide whether it's $200 great or not. The Philips DVP-642 is pretty cheap (should be $60 or less in the USA) and it can do all you ask for, but its SVCD support could be better. It only supports one audio track on SVCD and if it finds a subtitle on an SVCD, it will play only the first subtitle track and it can't be turned off! So much for "selectable subtitles" on SVCD. I think the DVP-642 is a good value for the money, but some are not happy with it, so I would suggest that you read some other comments about it before buying it.

  4. I would recommend the Toshiba SD-3990. It does all that you requested, and for as low as $49.

I can't find any Region or Macrovision hacks for it however.

Good to know about the Oppo player, that sounds top notch by the reviews I've seen. Upconversion thru DVI is great too since I don't have an HDMI input on my current HDTV. Never heard of them till this thread. Actually, from it's wide list of features, it does look to be worth the $200 price tag, and then some. They even have downloadable firmware upgrades! That's awesome.

Going to do a bit more shopping, but that one is at the top of my list so far.

I suggest you research the LG 9921P, it does all you require including
    upscaling to 1080i.

It's available in Aussie, and is excellent, I have and use one!.

If your TV has DVI/HDMI input, then go with the Oppo. Excellent player, great picture, and it plays everything, even the files that my DVP642 chokes on.

Well, I've decided I'm gonna go with the Oppo. I've done some more reading up on it and it would appear it far exceeds anything else in the $200 or less price range in both performance and features. Nice to see such a great product from a US based company. Gonna place the order today.

Thanks for all your input, much appreciated.

yep, the snow is all gone, 18 inches disappeared real quick, unseasonably warm

Question on up conversion HD DVD players. what do you suggest. how is the pic quality vs non hd format player. does the up conversion show a true 1080i pic. do you have to connect using hdmi or dvi? my tv is a Sony 60" lcd grand vega with only 1 dvi input whish I use for my hd cable box. I am currently connecting my dvd now with componet video. will up conversion work with componet video? is there a switch box I will need?
