  1. I'm sure this is covered somewhere on the site, but I haven't been able to find it yet. If someone could just point me in the right direction, I'd be grateful.

I have a file with the extension .divx. It's a container with the movie and subtitles inside, made to play on standalone divx players. Trouble is, I don't have a standalone player and need to convert to dvd. I'm familiar with how to do the conversion to mpg,, EXCEPT that I don't know how to get the subs out of the package. I've been fooling around with virtualdub and virtualdubmod, which can usually do anything, but I haven't been able to crack these subs out yet. Any help? Thanks in advance.

If I can get the subs out, I'll probably just hard-sub them in using virtualdub's frame server setting when I'm encoding to mpg.

There's a couple of subtitle rippers in the 'Subtitle' list in 'Tools' to the left.

And you would get better answers in our Subtitle forum. Moving you.

  3. Yes, I have looked through the subtitle rippers but so far they all seem to be made for ripping from a dvd and can't do anything with a divx container.

  4. OK, I have found subtitles for my movie on the internet, so I no longer need to remove them. But I still need to extract the avi from the divx container, because none of my encoding software can handle a file with .divx extension. Can anyone simply tell me how to extract the avi out of a divx container? I'm ususally pretty good at this stuff, but I've been scanning this site and the entire internet for hours, with no results. Seems like it should be so simple.

The .Divx container is simply an AVI file with extra stuff. Just rename it .AVI and it should work just like any other AVI file.

  6. Thanks, but already tried that. Didn't work. It will play in any player on my computer, but is not recognized as an avi in any encoding software.

Run Gspot on it first, see what it says. Standard procedure.

  8. I open DIVX files all the time with VirtualDub, AVISynth, etc.

Try opening your Divx file with VirtualDub. Set Video -> Direct Stream Copy. And Audio -> Direct Stream Copy. Then Save as AVI. That will remux the audio and video into a new AVI file without any of the other Divx stuff.

  9. Tried that already, as well. I get a beautiful avi which will play flawlessly, but is nothing but black screen in my TMPGEnc encoders as well as others. Strange.

  10. Have also run GSpot, it identifies the file as Divx 4 and says all codecs are in place to play file. And indeed, it plays perfectly. Just can't load into any encoder.

  11. I just tried TMPGEnc -- and it wouldn't open the Divx file!

So I changed the fourcc code from divx/DX50 to xvid/XVID and TMPGEnc opened it without any problem.

  12. Is that reply in the right thread? What divx file are you talking about?

If that's an answer to my problem, how do I change the 4cc code?

A Divx file that I have.

I used a hex editor but you can use AVI Fourcc Code Changer. Back the file up just in case...

  14. i've ran into the same issue with the subtitles, fortunately it's all on files i've personally created, so i can just resource them from the original disc.......divx uses a rather propritary subtitle format called xsub, and there's no tools that i've ran into as of yet that can do anything with them........basically they are the subtitles in bitmap form, from what i understand.....

  15. Thanks, I'll try changing the 4cc code. At this point, I no longer care about saving the subs; if I can get the movie itself converted to mpg I can add the subs I've found on the internet.

  16. Thanks, jagabo, changing the 4cc code worked. The avi still won't open in any encoder, but it will at least show up in virtualdub (which was before giving me a black screen) and I can then frameserve from virtualdub into TMPGEnc.
