Well, to start from the beginning...

I have Rambo: First Blood Part II, in collector's edition. No English subtitle, just Spanish. So when I tried to AutoGK the DVD, it suddenly hit me that this is a great time to add English subtitles.

So I got on the net and searched, and found quite a few. However, I must have been half asleep since I didn't bother to check if the subs actually match the version of video I got. :P As it turns out, it does NOT match at all. And I already spent the night generating the AVI. :P

So I loaded up Subtitle Workshop and try to sync up the first and last dialog. From the initial word "Rambo!" to the last "Day by day.", do sync... But it STILL won't match! Argh!

Then it hit me that maybe I can SubRip the Spanish subtitles and use that to sync the English one. So I did the SubRip, and got the Spanish subtitles down pat. (It helps that I actually do read Spanish). So I loaded up both into Subtitle Workshop... It was then it hit me... Two sides have DIFFERENT number of entries! ARGH! I have to split and combine lines to make them match first, THEN I can sync them.

So I did that, and it took the next three hours. What I thought was a mere extra "feature" is now turning into a MAJOR time-consuming task.

Finally it's split and combined right, two sides match, and timing was taken from the Spanish side so the English stuff is synced.

Then I started noticing all the flaws in the subtitle, like missing words, bad transliterations, so on and so forth. Eeek. Spent another 2 hours fixing up each and every line.

FINALLY, get to do AutoGK again... This time, with a PROPER set of English subtitles.

Lesson learned: don't assume the subtitles you get are right... CHECK FIRST!

Lesson learned: sync'ing subtitles is a MAJOR undertaking in time, expect to spend most of a day on it.

Lesson learned: Subtitle Workshop is a nice program, lots of way to use it. STILL wished it has an auto-sync feature that matches dialog to spoken stuff though... Instead of forcing us to manually line up the start/end time.
