  1. ok im at work today and my colleague has called in sick. (well it is Friday and the great institute of the sickie has taken affect)

so his phone has been going non stop this morning, the same person just ringing and ringing.

so here is the question if your calling someone how many rings do you give before hanging up?

for me 6 before i think no ones there 10 and i just hang up.

do people really go through 30 rings thinking someone will answer it and if so why would you hold on for so long?

I usually wait 4 rings and hang up at 6.

Hoever, at work people call co-workers who are at lunch and sometimes we break out a pool to see how many rings before the person gives up. When someone is out sick, is the best.

I think they are waiting for a VoiceMail to pick up. Our Phone system only has VM if you call the main line and choose the person's extension. If you call in the backline, VM doesn't pick up. If you call from your phone to someone with caller ID, they see the backline number, though we only give out the main number. When someone calls in and says I called and the phone just kept ringing, we ask them if they tried calling the main number. They'll tell us they called the number on their Caller ID, We recently had the numbers blocked from being listed, but obviously people are still calling in on the backline, and for about 6 months.

What? In the modern world after four to six rings the thing turns over to voice mail, at which time I hang up and you better have caller ID if you want to find out who I was (I don't do voice mail and automated phone systems) I am a real person and I am calling real people, if you want my companies money, you better pick up the phone! I have all the direct numbers that I need and I tell all of my new subs that if I ever get a voice message, then I am calling someone that will answer their own phone! When they ask why they lost out on a hundred thousand dollar gravey train, I tell them like it is! I answer for my customers and I expect to be answered when I am the customer. My boss has backed me up on this a few times. It is the same for a $4,000 job or a $400,000 job, it's all about the money and how badly you want it.

The only difference between an elected official and a pencil pusher is the price. In my dealings with the pencil pushers it often comes down to them being lazy. When that is the case I give them the easiest route and they follow it. From mayors to mailmen the only ones that I respect are the fire marshals, I haven't met one that I thought was crooked yet.

I do sometimes have to deal with automated government phone systems for permiting and inspections, but usually after the first meet and greet I have a good direct number, funny how that works.

  6. I hang up after 5. I figure if they have not picked up by then, they are not going to.

  8. yeh Zapper it does work that way. im lucky in that i dont deal with the public, just other people working for the government. doctors who feel its more important that they get their passwords changed by the IT manager when we have 6 people sitting on a help desk (that isnt in india) that are employed just for this reason. ahh ok thats the end of my rant.

I work in mortgages. I have 40-50 clients to deal with on any given day. Some of my work requires me to physically be away from the phone for at least 3-5 hours in order to get anything done. In estimation that give me an average of 4 hours every day to deal with 40-50 clients. An application can take 15-20 minutes over the phone. There's also calling to let people know whether they are approved or declined; and calling appraisers, underwriters, title companies, and realtors. I have a processor to help me with all this.

Do you really think 40-50 people are going to be able to get ahold of me or my processor directly and every time during the regular business day? If they don't want to do business with me, that's fine. However, I have one of the fastest turnaround times, no-closing cost, most competitive rate, AND an extremely high approval rating.

Believe me, you'd make sure you called in on the main line AND leave a message.

Probablly 75% of the business that my company does is mall retail buildout. Our customers are paying high dollar rent by the square foot from the time that they sign the lease (There are some stipulations and side deals sometimes, But time matters as much as money) We have a set of subs that are house broken and on the fast track, that we usually use. They know that the money is there and that they may have to jump thru hoops to get the job done. It is when something out of the ordinary comes into play that we have to break in new subs or vendors. Believe me, there are times when I want to throw the phone thru a block wall. Unless I am in the shower or a coma I answer it when it rings. Somebody that I know may get the "I'll call you right back" responce, but they get a live answer. I do hate being rude when I am in a face to face conversation with a client and taking calls, but if it pertains to the same project it is part of that teamwork spirit thing. If it is for something else, the caller gets the bums rush or an abrupt answer.

I love it when the office calls me in the feild and says that they have an emergency. I tell them to call 911 and I hang up. I get at least one of these calls a week and you would think that they would learn. It is usually followed by a return call that starts out "OK, we got a job for you that is gonna pay double time"

I am not really a total A-Hole on the phone, but you have play the game
