    Hi,
I have a file which is an Xvid .avi but also has the audio as MPEG-1 audio layer I.
I have tried to extract the .WAV from the file using VirtualDubMod, tried to convert to AC3; in fact tried to extract/convert the audio in a variety of ways but keep on coming up with the error "no audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format".

This audio codec does seem very primitive but nevertheless is a mystery. The audio WILL play on my PC but I was hoping to convert it to play on a stand-alone DVD player with either AC3 or Lame MP3.

For the life of me I have searched high and low for any post relating to this.
Q: Which Codec do I need to allow me to decompress the ausio so as I may rewrite it as eithe MP3 or even AC3.

    Any help appreciated...

    Cheers,

    Desmond.

ffmpeggui and convert from avi directly to ac3.
goldwave or avi2wav and convert to wav.

Many thanks Baldrick...ffmpeggui seems to be doing the job...

SO I then use TmpgEnc to merge the AC3 track back in to either a VOB or a new AVI ?

Would it be possible therefore to install a codec to allow me to decompress on the fly in VirtualDubMod then ?

    Cheers,

    Desmond.

The Fraunhofer decoder that comes with windows should be able to decode mp1. Guess there could be some kind of header problem, like when it won't decode some mp3 streams in avi's even though it can obviously handle mp3.

If you wanted to set the video to direct streaming and the audio to full processing in VDub. ffmpeg or mencoder can do the same thing.

    Hi Celtic_Druid...
Yep...that's what I ended up doing...I used VirtualDubMod to DirectStream the Video and included/merged the newly created AC3 file from ffmpeg. AV Synchronization was very good using the Interleaved option with a 500 ms lead.

Interestingly enough, on a 1.8 GHz processor, an 850Mb avi, a 130Mb AC3 file, took about 5 minutes overall (including about 1 minute to load the AC3 file) to merge/create.

This coupled with potentially changing the FourCC code from XviD to ('divx, 'DX50') (2 seconds). The only potential delay in overall processing is the check for packed bitstream (using the MPEG4modifier tool) and unpacking if necessary - potentially an extra 7 minutes.

Many thanks to all who read, replied and took an interest - this forum definitely has the 'gurus' !!!

    Cheers,

    Desmond.
