Hi guys, I need a good DVD player thats supports Divx with external subtitles, mostly .srt, and some .sub. I have a phillips DVP642, which after a firware update supossedly supports external subs, but as of yet I have not been able to make it work. I'm hoping not to spend alot of money, I dont need anything really fancy, I just need it to truly support external subs.

    Thanks ahead of time.

The Toshiba SD-3990 supports them both.

Thanks, do you own it? Do you have to do any configuration or conversion of the subtitle files? Really I just want to be able to burn the subs along with the flick, and have it work. This looks like a very good deal if it works well, only $49!!!!!!

    the 642 supports .srt subs

to get them to work, you must highlight the sub file in the dir menu, then press the subtitle button. you will get a message saying something like divx subtitles selected. then highlight the video file and press play.

If you want to spend some money on an excellent dvd player that is also fully Divx Pro compliant and supports srt/sub/idx subtitles, then take a look at the Oppo OPDV971H. http://www.oppodigital.com

I'm not much of a subtitle person. I've never actually messed around with them as far as authoring a disc is concerned.

I downloaded the DivX Test CD and ran it on the Toshiba SD-3990.

When you select the movie you want to watch a pop-up box comes up and you select the corresponding subtitle file that goes with it and it works.

I had DVP642 and it played all formats I tried.
    But subtitle never worked.

I'm thinking about getting toshiba 3990
    Hows this player?
Is this player plays divx and xvid formats well?
Also will this player play smi. subtitles?

I don't recall if there were smi subtitles on the test disc or not, so I don't know for sure if it will play them.

All of my AVI's I encode with XVid and it plays them fine.
