I have this DOS program and want to fileshare it on another computer on teh network. These are windows ME computers. I run networking wizard on both computers. The 2nd computer can see the program on computer1 but cant access it. The DOS icon has no option to fileshare unless i put that icon in a folder then select fileshare. any ideas

  2. You can't share files, you can only share folders and the files that are in them.

Are you trying to share a shortcut rather than the actual EXE or COM program?

  6. That's probably because there is another file on Computer 1 that it uses that is not available on computer 2.

  7. Try mapping the share as a drive. DOS programs often don't understand network addresses like

    \\name\share\folder\data.dat

    but require drive letters like:

    x:\folder\data.dat

  8. you didn't give us enough info to go on. Is this a database a simple program ..? if it is a simple program why do you want to share it? copy it to the other computer and run it just like computer 1. Many programs need to be network(able). For most DOS apps as mentioned need map drive and no long names.

this cant be installed on computer 2 because this program has a set number so when a child is entered it is given a number starting at 25000. so if i installed it on the 2nd computer then when they enter a child it will have the same number as computer1. all this info will b combine later on so it wont work to install it on the 2nd computer.

  11. rubberman, what you said above is the reason why your DOS application won't work. It is not network aware. You could force it but risk corrupted data/errors. But there is another way. Via an UltraVNC or TinyVNC window! Install the free VNC software on both computers. Setup a shortcut or batchfile to access the DOS program from the second pc. UltraVNC or TinyVNC are available free on the net. Just do a search.

There are other ways too, such as Telnet and IP isolation (isolate the work folder by IP and share it) but VNC is the easiest and safest for you I believe. If you are familiar with Remote Desktop that can work to - provided both computers have XP on them.

If you need wider compatibility, buy a copy of Norton pcAnywhere, works on almost any machine, any MS OS, from modem to TCP/IP.
