I'm planning on using VDUBMOD to convert some vob files to divx and there is a filter in there for smoothing which I believe is used with lower bitrates to get a better image but how much smoothing should I use during the conversion? It goes from 0 to 100 and I'd rather not waste a lot of time trying different numbers. Any ideas what a decent setting would be?

Trial and error is the only way. There is no perfect setting, as it varies from source to source. Just remember that smoothing kills detail, which may save you a little bit rate, but will very quickly make your video look very plastic and artificial.
