  1. I'm going to convert to AC3 using Soft Encode but as I have a 4 channel .wav I'd like to be able to have 4 channel AC3 as well. Is there anyway to save the separate channels as separate .wavs? Possibly with Goldwave or another audio editing tool?

You might try besweet. I know it can go from 6 channel ac3 to 6 mono wav files. It may let you do it for a multichannel wav file.

How did you get a multichannel wav file in the first place? If you don't mind me asking, just curious.

Have you tried loading the original avi intact into your encoding program? Maybe it will read the avi with the multichannel sound without reencoding it. Worth a try.

like i mentioned to the other bloke trying to use softencode. it's a 7 seven year old program that never worked. it never made compliant ac3 audio files. that "free" copy of v1.0 you have is worth just that. it was never supported or updated IIRC.

  8. I've used soft encode before without problems. Saying that it was only for simple 2 channel audio though but the AC3 files worked on my DVDs. I'll probably upgrade to something else soon though.

Anyone else know of a way to separate the 4 channels into 4 wavs?

adobe audition works with multichannel wavs and you can export them as separate mono wavs.

  11. If you don't have Audition, you could try an excellent free utility called wavewizard. It will even work with Soft Encode if you want, or simply split your file into four. You can find it in the tools section at www.needfulthings.webhop.org. Alternatively, you can find some free commandline tools at http://www.bath.ac.uk/~masrwd/mctools.html or the AFsp package from McGill University (http://www-mmsp.ece.mcgill.ca/Documents/Software/index.html ; software at ftp://ftp.tsp.ece.mcgill.ca/TSP/AFsp/).

You could also check out Plogue Bidule, which has a time-limited demo good until May at www.plogue.com. In its File Recorder object, just check the box for multiple mono files, and you'll get your multiple files.

    Regards,
    Steve.

Audacity is one. Search on multi channel wav &/or WAVEFORMATEXTENSIBLE.
