Successfully backed up Madagascar DVD with DVDFab Decrypter -> FixVTS -> DVDShrink, but am now trying to make an AVI version too, from the backups. Every ripper (to create one single VOB from the main title) dies when parsing the IFOs - DVDDecypter spurts off access violation message boxes all over the screen then dies, ReJig simply dies - Yet, the backup works 100% when I play it. Ideas on what to do next?

i dont know if this will help, but i converted madagascar,my backup, movie only to avi with some of the freeware psp convertors, and stuck it on my kids xbox, and a smaller filesized one on my psp memory stick, with no problems.
ive used programmes like imtoo psp convertor, and winavi worked too,v7.
there are others, but not really tried them.LifeStudies 1.01 - The Angle Of The Dangle Is Indirectly Proportionate To The Heat Of The Beat,Provided The Mass Of The Ass Is Constant. -
mats,
Here's something you can try:
- Open the IFOs that crash with PgcEdit, then save. PGCEdit recreates and rewrites a good part of the IFO. This might do the trick.
- Process the entire DVD with vobblanker. Same thing here, vobblanker recreates almost all tables from scratch.
Just 2 easy things to try...
jeanlMenuShrink a free tool to shrink menus into stills with or without audio!
DVDSubEdit: a free tool to modify your subtitles directly inside the vob. -
Once you have it ripped on the hard disc, can't you just run dgindex and load the d2v through avisynth to vdub?
If you have trouble, maybe you can rip it with DVDD using the PSL2 plugin-wizard, that should get rid of anything.Melde Melda Vessė

Tried the PGCEdit path - ReJig still crashes in ifo mode. Suspect DVDDecrypter will too.
VOB2MPG seems to handle it well, tho! (Prolly doesn't look at the IFOs...)

*IF* any prob with VOB2MPG, Shrink to isolate title, then whatever? Guessing really that path in ifos isn't straight forward, but if shrink was able to read it the first time, should this time too. -

Couldn't you frameserve the movie only portion of the VOBs through DVD2AVI and then use this as input into VirtualDub or TMPGEnc?

Yes, that'd have been a possibility. But it all worked out fine using VOB2MPG.

For future reference (I didn't see that you tried it), try dvddecrypter/smartripper in stream mode to get the m2v and a3 files. It worked for me on that disc.

If back dvd (normally has no protection)... copy all too hd folder .
Normally the first 1 gigabyte vob will indicate start of title , that smaller one some user's will see at the start ... that's normally the menu .
Example :
Vts_08_0.vob (300mbs = menu)
Vts_08_1.vob (Title start's here)
Vts_08_2.vob
Vts_08_3.vob
Vts_08_4.vob
Vts_08_5.vob
Vts_08_6.vob
Vts_08_7.vob (600mbs = end of title)
Use vobedit , open first main title vob (movie title - example = vts_08_1.vob) , Choose demux .
Demux m2v stream , sellect "demux all video stream's" , and choose "split on new vob id" , this prevent's the 4 gigabyte barrier problem's .
Choose a new folder for output .
Repeat demux step for audio .. to same new folder as m2v , but this time , use the "demux all audio" feature listed below , do not split it .
This way , each vob will have it's own seperate m2v video stream , and the audio will be 1 single stream ... though you may have multiple audio file's , normally the one with "0x80" is the default english audio file .
Use VOBListMaker to make a .lst file of the original vob's .
Modify .lst file with notepad to refect m2v change's
Example of "the CORE" dvd rip , after demuxing and m2v change's :
e:\core\VTS_07_1.M2V
e:\core\VTS_07_2.M2V
e:\core\VTS_07_3.M2V
e:\core\VTS_07_4.M2V
e:\core\VTS_07_5.M2V
e:\core\VTS_07_6.M2V
Open new .lst file with virtualdub .
Open besweet , open that 0x80 ac3 stream , convert to wav , when done , close besweet .
You can now sellect under virtualdub's audio feature's "wav" , locate this new wav file generated by besweet .
Done ...
All you need to do is setup the appropriate audio compression (must set to full processing under audio feature before hand) .
Setup any video filter's you wish to include , such as resize .
Setup appropriate video compression , and any extra setting's .
Save as avi (dont forget when naming file , you must add the avi extension on to it's name) .
Watch the output size .
If you wish to include on a cd , you may need to restart the "save as avi" bit if it is going to exceed 700mb's .
Normally resize down a little (must be dividable by 4) .
Audio compression , mpeg layer 3 , choose stereo , between 4 and 6kbs , will keep audio under control .
Two pass encoding will result in better outcome , but take's 2 time's longer .
You may need to do this resize thing a few time's , untill vdub show's after 6 minute's video size outcome is stable , showing less than 680mb's , which is a comfortable size for cd .
In testing , xvid , and other compressor's like it , play well on mpeg4 / divx dvd player's (hyundai come with 3 years warrantee) .
No problem with audio ... it's perfect .
It's just my favourite method of converting dvd to avi's for mpeg4 players
