  1. I have a Pioneer A05 I think burner where max burn speed is 4X. I have been using 4X Ritek G04's but they seem harder to get now since everyone is going to 8X media with the faster burners.

Can I use faster rated media without problem like the newer G05 8X Media? I think a slower burner with faster media should be ok just not the other way around.

Any recommendations for DVD-R Media quality similar to the G04's. I had great luck with them never a bad disk and the price was right.

Most 8X DVDs should work. Check lordsmurf's site for good information on media. Depending on your burning program, you may be able to set the speed to 4X or it may do it automatically.

I cannot speak for the Pioneer burners, but I had a Sony 510a that burned Ritek G04 media flawlessly - but would not burn G05 media at all. This was due to Sony not bothering to release firmware updates to enable the drive to properly burn newer media. I solved the problem by switching to a Benq 1620 burner, which burned the Ritek G05 media flawlessly - along with any other media I've tried so far.

I would suggest starting by making sure you have the most up to date firmware in your Pioneer drive. You can also look under DVDWriters on this site to possibly learn the experiences of others with your same drive regarding what media works well. Last but not least - buy a stack of G05 media and experiment . . . .

Update - I looked under the DVD Writers section and found 2 entries for Ritek G05 internally identified media on a Pioneer A05 - both said it worked fine.

  4. I use NERO 7 for burning and yes it lets me set the burn speed. Actually my burner is a Memorex DualX that I upgraded to the Pioneer Bios as per this and other forums. It was a Pioneer rebadged. It now identifies itself as a Pioneer.

Obviously trying some G05 disks would show me if they work but I hate to buy a bunch of disks that are rendered useless is they don't work since I buy in bulk.

I will check for new firmware Rich as you suggested.

    thanks for the comments.

  5. Well I found out my Pioneer drive was an A06/106D instead of an A05 and I upgraded the firmware. I tried an 8x dvd-r at 4X and it worked fine.
