It's a problem with some AVI files, I think. Improperly encoded.

Yes it will, but there's bazillion subflavors of AVI, due to different combinations of codec / bitrate / and audio codec used. In general, if you can't open it in TMPGEnc, you didn't install the right codec(s). And before you run off and install those codec packs, don't. Use GSpot and such tools, figure out exactly what you need, and install ONLY that.

--- how do I convert .mp4 to mpg?
    Search in the tools section.

That sounds like a TMPGEnc DVD Author error, and is due to non dvd-compliant files.

What error message ? File cannot be opened, or unsupported ? Checked https://www.videohelp.com/tmpgenc.htm#problems ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  5. ok - i downloaded the trial of "divxtodvd" and it appears to work tho the mp4 file has TONS of pixelization when i convert... any ideas as to why?

is it because its a trial with the watermark?

    thank you

The trial version has the watermark. If you purchase it, that version doesn't. There is also a freeware older version on the 'Tools' page, but it will only do 700MB max files.

The pixelization is usually from too low a bitrate or trying to compress a file too much. If you have a good quality AVI you shouldn't see that problem.

DivxToDVD is a simple converter that works for the average Xvid or other video file. If you have problems, then a dedicated encoder like TMPGEnc is a better choice as it has more adjustments for bitrate, etc.

DVD Source Creator is a simplified version of TMPGEnc encoder. It should work for what you want to do.

TMPGEnc DVD Author is the program to create the DVD structure, menus, etc., and burn a DVD afterwards if you want. Both an encoder and an authoring program are needed to make a DVD.

If you look to the upper left, under 'What is' DVD, you will see information about the DVD file structure.

  10. thank you - it appears the old divx2dvd worked on the mp4 file with very little pixeling vs the new one.

so i will try making an actual dvd and then report back

    i appreciate everyone's help!

    Ummmm ... what ?

I'm pretty sure there's no file-size limits on the old freeware version
    If in doubt, Google it.
