    Hello, Im new here.
I have over 100 small video's and some large video's on my hard drive.
I would like to burn these to DVD's that will play on regular DVD players. I have "Nero 7".

The video file types are .avi, .wmv and I think some are MPEG (they open with InterVideo WinDVD, how do I find out what they are?)

From what I understand I have to convert these to VOB/BUP/IFO and then burn them to DVD.
How should I go about doing this? Should I use Nero 7 to do the conversion, chapters, burn, etc...? or should I use a different converter and then Burn them with Nero?

I dont want to spend any money on any programs though.

    Thanks alot for your help!!,

You're asking too much of Nero.

First thing you would want to do is segregate them by type. If in doubt, drop them into a program like Gspot to identify their filetype. Super works OK for WMV converting. For AVI you can use a stand alone encoder like TMPGEnc.

After you know the filetypes, you can set up your encoder(s) and convert them to MPEG format. This will take quite a while, especially if they have different formats, framerates, framesizes, etc. You want to look to the top left for 'What is' DVD to see what the DVD format specs are.

Then you encode to those specs and finally author them to DVD with a program like TMPGEnc DVD Author and burn them to DVD.

Thanks. Im checking the files now with Gspot. Some of them are "RIFF/CDXA-->MPEG" Do I treat these like regular MPEG files?

Also, the files that I thought were ".wmv", are "ASF (.WMA/.WMV)" can I still use "Super" to convert them?

    What is "Authoring"?

    Im a newbie

Just because you're a newbie doesn't mean people will give you the info on a silver platter. You'll get much more help around here if you show that you can use a bit of effort looking for stuff first.

    Familiarise yourself with the glossary:
    https://www.videohelp.com/glossary

    https://www.videohelp.com/glossary?A#Author
To format video into a form ready to burn onto a recordable disc or to stream onto the Internet. VCD, SVCD and DVD Author is to format video into its standard file structure and also add optional menus, chapters, audio tracks, subtitles, slideshows and much more.
Then there's also the "What is ..." sections up on the top left, which contain all the info regarding specifications. Then there's the Guides section, which tells you how to do it. Then there's the tools section, which contains most of the tools that the guides use. Then there's the forums.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I've been looking at the TMPGEnc series of products now.
So, I could use TMPGEnc XPress to convert all the files to MPEG?
Then I can use TMPGEnc DVD Author to create the DVD files?

    Thanks!

I had to wait a day before I could post here, so I spent that time searching around, but I just didn't find quite what I wanted to know.

Are there any requirements for the "Source Files" to be used on DVD?
Some of the video's I have are small (320x240).

Also Im looking at the Guides for TMPGEnc XPress, but they dont really explain how to adjust the settings for each different source file.
Can anyone link me to the best tutorial for TMPGEnc XPress?

A good one for DVD Author would be great too.

    Thanks!!

http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/AVI2DVD.htm is more of a guide for TMPGEnc Plus, but has a lot of good information in it that you may be able to relate to TMPGEnc XPress.
    If in doubt, Google it.
