When viewing the recorded programs on the PC I can see a line or two at the top that looks completely garbled, like random data. Of course you can't see it when viewing on TV since they overscan by some percentage so those lines get clipped.
I've observed it on almost all DVD recorders I've tried (Liteon 5006, Memorex 2002, Govideo VR1940, Coby DVD-R1200) with the exception of Magnavox MVDR-660. Some of them use LSI, some Mediatek chipset.
I wonder if those are the scan lines with the other encoded info in them (aka data lines like cable encryption, station information etc.) However I don't see those consistently on all channels and of course Magnavox doesn't have them.
Is anyone else seeing those lines? If so, any idea what those lines are? They are pretty annoying when viewing on PC.

What is your source? That is likely where the noisy lines are coming from. It is not uncommon for cable and broadcast TV channels to have some frame edge noise in the overscan area. Every program, commercial, etc. varies and sometimes will have this type of noies, too.

I notice that Directv has a garbled line usually on top of the screen when I capture to dvd.

Sounds like you are seeing the closed captioning data. It's not supposed to be viewable.

Yeah I figured it must be the data lines. The funny thing is that Magnavox is the only one that does not display them EVER. Every recording I made on it in all qualities had no lines. I gues they must clip it internally before recording.
