I'm trying to play Xvid on my Philips standalone player, it's a DVP630 I think. Other files seem to work fine but on two particular files I'm having some issues with the video, the sound works fine. The video seems to show blocks of color, you can make out the basic forms of characters and locations in the movie but they're all covered with these colorful blocks, it's like what a movie would look like on acid. Another video file shows extreme bluriness.

I've tried looking up answers and the closest I've found is that the files could have been encoded with QPEL or GMC. But from what I've read, then the DVD player wouldn't even be able to read the file at all, which isn't the case. Anyone know what the problem could be?

  2. Press System Menu on the remote twice.

The problem stems from custom matrices used for the compression.

Will this get rid of the problem permanently? Or will I have to do it everytime I watch these files? Thans for the help. I'll try it tonight when I get home from work!

You have to do it each time you watch one of those files. The permanent fix is to reencode the video. But you'll lose some quality if you do that.

  5. Hi-

Most likely they use Custom Quant Matrices, which ESS chipset based players don't handle well. The double-click of the Menu button will work to fix some of them, but I think you'll have to press it every time. The only permanent fix will be to reencode them using either of the 2 standard matrices, H.263 or MPEG.

    Edit: You beat me, jagabo.
