I am coping VHS tapes to the HDD of my DVR and then burning that to a DVD. Now I want to edit the files using Adobe Premier Elements that will read a VOB file.
Can I just copy the VOB files directly to my PC HD or do I need to use a ripping tool like DVDDecrypter? What would be the benefit of using a ripper?
Do you know if Premier Elements will rewrite the edited VOB to a new DVD without re-encoding? I am worried about a loss of picture quality and wonder if I should be using another tool that does not re-encode.
Thanks

you can just copy.
premiere will reencode. use mpeg video wizard if you want something that doesn't reeencoding everything. -
Thanks - I will give it a try.
I was disappointed with the post editing DVD produced by Adobe Premier (I did simple things like transistions and cutting out a few scenes). The new DVD has lots of visible jagged edges especially with my daughter jumping on a bed. I assume that this is an interlace issue - perhaps caused by the reencoding - picture quality was fine before reencoding by Premier Elements.
I just hate to have this slick video editing tool but not be able to use it for this.
Thanks again -
Hi. I've found the most trouble free method of getting DVD's back to the PC to edit is by using a capture card (Pinnacle AV/DV + studio 9 ) it allows you to connect a standard DVD player using a Scart to composite lead (Composite being the capture card connections)
Simply capture from your DVD Disk to PC and create an Mpeg2 file, edit out the uneeded, re-save and reburn to DVD (job done)
I use this method regularly with 100% success rate, It may take longer as you have to play the film into the PC.
Not tried using other capture cards so cannot guarantee success.
Hope this helps you out. -
Why do you need to capture what is already mpeg2 through an analogue input and then immediately encode it to mpeg2 for editing. Much easier to just rip and demux the original disc. Same outcome, but without the genrational loss in between.
