What codecs do I need to play Divx?

Oooops... this question has been asd a million times??

    I'm lost.
I've done lots and lot of searching.
But... can't decide on what to go for.
I've tried searching on Yahoo and have downloaded a few files.
I haven't installed anything yet - do I really have to install a 15MB file to get the codec I need?

From a previous posting, I was given the following link:
    www.divx-digest.com/software/mpeg4codec.html

That codec is 5 years old... do I need something more recent to pl

I've previously heard that generally that you should only install the codecs you need, rather than a zillion all at once?

I'm confused: why is there not one single source to get safe codecs from??

    Thanks.

XVID will also display DIVX up to 5 I think.

FFDShow is your Swiss-Army-Knife (tm) of codecs, shows just about everything, video AND audio. May not be the fastest, but definitely the mostest.

Unless you have a 500 MHz machine, it wouldn't matter.

    I wouldn't say that. Try playing 720p stuff on a 1GHz machine.

libavcodec as used by ffdshow is the fastest. XviD supports all versions of DivX except for 3 since it isn't MPEG-4.

Using libavcodec via mplayer or VLC is faster still though.

ok... happy to go with ffddshow.
but... i've read all sorts of things about not clogging up ur system with loooads of codecs... and dangering causing conflicts??

isn't that what ffddshow will do?

    thanks.

  8. ffdshow isnt that bad, what you gotta worry about is whats called a codec pack...those are BAD BAD BAD......ffdshow basically is a set of direct show filters that can play back your video, and wont really cause any harm.....do NOT install k-lite or angel potion (i know that's probably REALLY old and not even around to speak of any more) or anything else with the words codec pack attatched to it

    thanks for the replies.

    what about the following:

www.divx.com - comes top of search engine lists.
www.divx-digest.com - comes on first page of search engines.
www.free-codecs.com/download/DivX_Free.htm (it's the 'free' that worries me!).
    http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec.

those are what come up if you do a search on yahoo.

maybe i'm being ultra cautious... but are the above OK?
