in any version of Windows 95/98/NT/2K/ME/XP, 1) open a folder, 2) at the top bar click "View", 3) choose "Folder Options", 4) hit the "View" tab, 5) open the "Files and Folders" icon, 6) go down to the option "Hide File Extensions for Known Filetypes", make sure that is unchecked, 7) "Apply" and "OK" it. now all files will be shown with their extension and u can rename it freely

If you are trying to do a mass conversion, say u need to change xxx1.mp3 into xxx.gif to hide them on free web servers, u can do this.
Run MS-DOS and go to the folder.(it can only be 8 characters long.)
Ren *.mp3 *.gif

Hey, Greg12 - you remembered!
Listen, if you really wanna be sneaky with those free web servers, rename that *.mp3 to something like *.exe. You see, a 2MB gif or whatever looks a bit suspicious, LOL. Most gifs only run upto a few Kbs whereas a 2MB .exe is common.
