    Hi,
I searched the forums and couldn't find any reference to this problem.

I have in the past spent many hours converting XviD to DivX using VirtualDubMod which had the advantage of being able to interleave AC3 audio (converted from .Wav extracts) and of course the fact that I didn't realize that a FOURCC change might have saved me time. However, forgetting the need for AC3, I used the AVIC program to change the Description and Codec on some AVI files with some varying results.
I have a Sony DVP-LS785 which plays back DivX only. The majority of the AVI files that are patched from XVid to DivX (XVID to DX50) using AVIC are played back with EXCELLENT video frame quality, very reasonable stereo output (with an AV Player that used Dolby ProLogic II is very acceptable). However, most times the frame to frame playback is somewhat 'jerky'. I can further extrapolate on this by saying that when I pause the playback and execute a frame by frame advance then every 4th Frame doesn't advance (e.g. Frame A, B, C, C, D?, E, F, F ..etc) this might explain the jerkiness ?
Question: On a Full VirtualDub conversion, the playback is not jerky though the video frame quality is worse - pixelated/mosaic effects; but on a patched (AVIC) file the playback is jerky - Is this problem addressable or do I have to accept that there is a 'slight' difference between XviD and DivX and the interaction with this DVD Player (or any other DivX only player) ??

On a related issue, is there ANY AVIC out there that will accept batch mode type parameters - its a pain having to go back now and convert around 100 XVIDs BEFORE I get the answer to the previous question.

    e.g. AVIC -f filename.avi -d divx -c DX50

    Many thanks in advance,

    Cheers,

    Desmond.

I thought Sony released a firmware update with support for XviD's fourCC?

Could be that your player is MTK based, doesn't like packed bitstream and > 1 consecutive bframes and your files have > 1 bframe and are packed. Firmware update should also fix though that, otherwise you would need to unpack with MPEG4Modifier.

Many thanks Celtic_Druid...I'm a celt myself

I do some hunting...I found a good article in the forum http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=98228 which has explained a 'little' to me. Where is is the best site for firmware updates ? http://mtz.softpedia.com/ seems to be quite a decent site I have found ?

    Cheers,

    Desmond.

  4. Try disabling bframes when you encode with Xvid.

    Hi Jugabo,
Thanks for your input but I think you are slightly missing the point..if I was going to spend time encoding then I would encode to DivX with AC3 - I wanted to avoid spending excess time in changing all my XViDs so they can be played on my Standalone DVD Player.
Uisng the patch facility AVIC went a long way..now I just need to know how to avoid the jerkiness...

    Cheers Desmond.

    YES - Excellent !!! Thanks Celtic_Druid and Jagabo ...

Looks like it was the Packed Bitstream...

    In summary
    a) I loaded up the file into Mpeg4Modifier.
    b) I unchecked the box - Packed Bitstream: Unpack
    c) Save.

No other changes were made and it seems were necessary.

So now...all I need is the ability to load all my files into a batch stream...

So next Question: Any batch stream handling of AVIC and Mpeg4Modifier possible ?

    Cheers (and thanks)

    Desmond.

MPEG-4 Modifier is easy, just use UnpackCL. For the fourCC I am not sure, guess you could use some kind of HEX editor that can batch.

Seriously though, there should be a firmware update which would fix both issues.

Believe me ...I've tried...I've posted a note in the Sony Forum...No reply as yet..

I can see Updated Firmware for 4 models but not mine.

    Cheers,

    Desmond.
