When I insert a CD into any of my CD (or DVD) drives, it takes about 5 seconds or more (but it seems like an eternity - you'll often hear me yelling at the drive!) before it will spinup to read the disk. I had one of these drives in my Win98 machine, and it would spinup without delay. While the system is waiting, Explorer basically freezes.

Is there a registry tweak to get immediate spinup of the drives?

I assume y ou winxp now.... i am not sure if the issue is the cd comming up to speed unless there something wrong physically with the cd drive!!

I would maybe take a look at your system overalll... ie: how the boot up time... ? or are the programs comming up in a timely manner!!? possbilty either startup programs or services running in the background is maybe the cause...
for example ( ihave winxp)... my disktett drive it is slow..... compared to what i am used to with my other version of windows.. and it because of one of the programs or services running in the background... in fact still trying to determine which culprit... it starting lok to me one or more of the services.... causing the sluggishness...
those are my thought for what there worth.. smile....

I'm not sure that's necessarily spinup. More likely Explorer taking it's time to see what is on the disc. And what JerryB said.

Maybe there is a way to keep Explorer for trying to index and catalog your disc contents every time you insert a disc? I don't know if drive indexing can be turned off for a CD/DVD drive?

Have you tried turning off all the Autoplay options in Properties?
