Select AutoMode under output, select DVD and NTSC.

Or mpeg(mpeg2), 720x480 or 352x240 and 29.97frame/sec, 48000 audio. and add in your authoring tool.

Virtualdub 1.3c should open ASF files and convert to AVI - however my experience has been that a lot of ASFs (particularly downloaded files) are brokn in some way, shape or form. In this case, ASFTools has generally been able to solve my problems.

If worst comes to worst, you could probably use an AVISynth script to get the file into virtualdub.
    If in doubt, Google it.

If you want DVD, I'd just open it in an MPEG encoder such as TMPGEnc. Again, you may need to "frameserve" via AVISynth if it won't open the file on its own.

There's no real point going via AVI though if DVD is your goal.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Tell SUPER to output NTSC and it should play on your DVD player.
    If in doubt, Google it.

So you're saying that choosing PAL output worked fine, but choosing NTSC output caused mencoder to crap out ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

Is your ASF file PAL ?

If so, that might be where the error is coming from. It may be advisable to try a PAL to NTSC conversion on the finished DVD files (if you're feeling game).
    If in doubt, Google it.
