I have Nero Startsmart and recently I've been having problems uploading AVI files into a project. The file only shows up as an audio file. I am using Nero to burn AVI files to a VCD. I've used Nero Startsmart many times in the past and I never had a problem with it. It seems as though MPEG files will upload just fine, just not AVI's.

If anybody has any idea what the problem could be and can help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Use the latest G-Spot to determine if you have the correct codecs installed to play back the video. Do not use a codec pack if it turns out you need to install anything.

Despite marketing mumbo jumbo, there will never be a allinone converter able to handle all kinds of source files - as you've just discovered.
mpg is in comparision to AVI a very tightly specified format, whereas AVI can contain almost anything.

I am not exactly sure how that G-Spot program works. So how exactly can I tell if I am indeed missing codecs? Sorry, I am new to all of this so I am lost most of the time.

AVI is not a specifc file type. AVI is just a container that holds video files. There are many different codecs that could have been used to encode the video file that is in it. IF your system doesn't have the particular codec installed that was used to create the file, you can't play it or import it into Nero. As for how to use Gspot, read the guide. It will tell you the codec that was used to encode the file that you have. You can then use that information to find that codec and install it on your system.

G-Spot says that the codecs is installed. So I am even more confused now than I was before.

Sometimes you can have conflicts with Codecs. If you have installed too many, it can sometimes cause a problem.

May I suggest you start reading some of the numerous guides on AVI to VCD here at VideoHelp, and forget all about Nero for this?

Sorry to bump this thread. I just didn't want to start a new thread for the same problem.

I was able to figure out how to use GSpot and I did find that it said a few codecs were missing. However I'm not sure how to fix them, or if I even can. According to the report it says I am missing 4 codecs and the driver file is missing. Can anybody explain to me what exactly this means and how/if I am able to fix this? Thanks in advance!

If I try to upload an AVI file into Windows Movie Maker (for example) I get this message:

The file C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\Phoenix Coyotes 2005-2006.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

In the folder where I store all these clips I have each clip viewed as thumbnails. All the AVI thumbnails are blank with only the windows media player icon and the rest of the clips (which are MPEG) have a picture of whatever is on the begining of the clip.

So I have absolutely no idea what the problem is.

Test the file with Gspot, identify the missing codec, download and install the missing codec. Google is your friend in finding codecs, as is the Tools section of this site.

I'd try ffdshow first, as it's able to decode a lot of commonly used codecs.
