Hey GOOD LUCK people on finding the VERBATIM DVD+R DL at BEST BUY, Cause last week I got the run around. If I've heard correct. This sale has gone on for 3 weeks now and I'm trying to understand how? Which leads to what happened when I visited a local BB to take advantage of the "Peek-A-Boo" Now you see Dual Layer"? Now you don't. Here we go. I often take advantage of BB media sales but this was my 1st time showing interest in dual layer media. I went to the media isle looking for the 10 pack dual layer dvd media selling for $19.99. This was Tuesday and to my surprise BB was all out? I naturally asked for a rain check which I received at the customer svc desk.

Later that evening I visited a BB close to home, And as I approached a BB department manager he had 3, 5 pack Verbatim DL disc which go for $24.99 (individually packaged in a 5 disc box) and was at the register trying to locate the on-sale Verbatim DL items. I let him know I like another customer he was waiting on was looking for the same on-sale dual layer media. I advised that I had a rain-check for 3 packages. The manager turns to me and ask how did I get a rain check? He then explained that their will be no re-stocking of the on-sale DL media? I then suggested that I be compensated for a number of reasons the biggest of them was being mislead by a department manager and sales rep who explained I could use the raincheck instead of offering to sell me a comparable Verbatim DL item.

He agreed and allowed me to purchase 2 5packs of Verbatim DL dvd media at the same price of the on-sale and out-of-stock? DL media. Which was great cause these turned out to be the latest max 10x DVD+R DL Verbatim media part# 95234. This was my 1st time burning using DL media and as it turned out my SONY DW-D22A OEM DL burner defaults to a slow but safe 2.4x burn speed. So I purchase the alternate pack of Verbatim DL and was impressed that I was able back three compressed DVD titles up to just one DL dvd media disc. So the next day I returned to the store where I got the rain check with my receipt from the BB I made a purchase from. This time a set of different department managers were also shocked that I possesed a raincheck for now 2 more packages of the on sale DL Verbatim + R media.

At 1st they were hesitant to match the offer made at another BB store, An offer that this store should have made in the 1st place. They 1st suggested that I visit a 3rd location where 17 packs of the sale DL media was on hand. I advised that I was on my lunch and needed this matter to be resolved here and now. They then agreed and like the other store allowed for me to purchase 2, 5packs reg. $24.99 a pack for just $19.99 satisfied I let them keep the rain check for the 3rd pack. Now these disc are on sale again? Somethings fishy here? I think BB suffers from allowing their employees to purchase from available customer stock. Another tactic I've seen at BB is to have a daily limit i.e. place say 10 items on the shelf watch then sell-out advise customers no rain checks just to restock the next day? and commence to the same practice of forcing the customer to return to BB each day during the normally 1 week sale to purchase from their "daily" limited available stock thus my phrasing "Peek-A-Boo". A selfish practice which keeps the customer hanging on and waiting. But if they are willing to give me a better product un-needingly while they hoard the product on their stock rooms then so be it.

They were on sale this past week at BB, the week before they were not, but they were on sale for the same price at Officemax, and the week before that they were on sale at BB.

I bought some from both OM & BB, there are 3 BB near me and i go to the one that usually stocks less than the other 2 and they had like 15 boxes sitting on the shelf saturday afternoon when i bought some.
OM had quite a few on the shelf the one day i went in there to buy some also.

Now for the perks, I was able to back up both seasons 1&2 of the Dave Chappelle Show (1st season 2-disc 2nd season 3-disc ) to just 2 DVD+R DL disc (Amazing!) I also backed up my 2-disc Bad Boys Of Comedy season 1 to just 1 disc. Some might say you loose the option for on-disc menu optioning, But my SONY DVP-NS50P DVD players $79.99 have the option for both title and chapter viewing, So I have no need for on disc menu option. The benefits are less wear on DVD players drive and I can kick back and watch the entire season without getting up to change to 2nd or sometimes 3rd disc as with the 2nd season of the Chappelle Show. Question? Why is the blank media and movie industry pushing for Blue-Ray and HD-DVD when then movie industry as well as the buying general public has not had the opportunity to reap the benefits of dual layer disc with either copy-written store bought disc or blank DL media?

  4. Commerical movies are on DL disks. They are often in the 11G range. The layer change is often noticed by a short frozen moment before the other layer begins.

Hollywood's main reasons for embracing Blu-Ray are Higher Quality (HDTV) and comensurate higher prices and higer profits. The consumer will need to buy new Blue-Ray players, and if they want to record their own discs, they will also need Blue Ray writers and media—presumably updated burning software as well. And of course the new hardware is useless without an HDCP monitor. Oh, I almost forgot—Blue Ray will probably bring newer forms of copy protection.

@willrob Your point well taken and I do realize that DL is being used at that capacity to accomedate DVD extra's, bonus material etc. But things like two for 1 price DVD'S ie 2 titles on one DL disc have yet to be explored. Also because of high prices the general buying public currently have no strong interest in purchasing DL blank media understandably because of available low cost -R and +R 4.7 GB blank media. How do they expect people to want to purchase a more expensive Blue-Ray HD-DVD TV, or media player?

And to piggy back on your point of increased profit for the movie industry, Blue Ray and HD DVD are 2 technologies which are competing for the top media spot again at a time when people are just getting the gist of DVD media on all levels at reduced cost. It's like brain washing the consumer that widescreen is better when the trick is simply to not make full screen versions readily available at most retail outlets and none of the major DVD rental outlets all to encourage the purchase of high cost LCD & Plasma HD capable flat screen TV's?

I know personally a DVD rental store who rents both fullscreen and wide screeen versions of a given new release and the full screen is always all rented out before widescreen? We have to realize that these two new media techologies are being introduced amidst the option to simply by standard DVD at lower cost. Trust me, it will be years before Blue-Ray or HD-DVD catches on with general consumers, all at the risk of failing like Laser Disc failed to catch on in the 90's. I went to look at possibly buying a HD ready flat screen LCD and at the price of $1499 I could buy three top brand 27" to 32 inch flat screen traditional monitor tv's.

Remember flat screen plasma and lcd started out around $15,000 dollars some 5 years ago and flat screen plasma and lcd tv's are still not affordable at to the general public $1,000 to $1,400 for a 32inch.

After having my interest peaked by some of the recent DL threads, I bought some of the Fuji DL's today at Best Buy. Currently on sale this week for $9.00 for a three pack.

I burned 3 backup movies tonight on the media without a hitch. As many of you, I usually use Verbatim media for DL. I actually watched one of the movies all the way through on my Phillips 642 standalone DVD player (which I love --- it plays everything). No problems.

Now for the disk ID. I expected it to be Ricoh. I was wrong. The ID says: RITEK D01

So now the cat's out of the bag as to the manufacturer. Having said that, I had no problems. Burned on an older Sony DRU 700A -- updated

My BenQ was made in July (China) and I bought it from NewEgg .. I have burned Verbatim DVD+R DL (MKM001), Ritek DVD+R DL (RitekD01), Fuji DVD+R DL (RicohjpnD00), Fuji -R (TYG02), Fuji +R (Yuden000T02), Maxell +R (MXL002), Sony +R (SonyD11 & D21), Verbatim +R (MCC004) and a crapload of Verbatim +R (MCC003). The MXL002 and the SonyD11 are NOT on the 'offical' BenQ list but they burned and scanned just fine. I only burned 20 out of the 30 -R Fuji discs that I purchased, but they burned and scanned great. NO COASTERS YET .. (knock on wood)

This is the fifth different DVD burner that I've owned and it produces the best scans and the best playback of the bunch.

    Lacywest says ...

So what is it ... RicohjpnD00 or RITEK D01
