  1. I am sorry for the repost...I posted this question recently but cannot find it, even searching by the author

I just finished making subtitles for 9 minutes of mpg file with subtitle creator. They are in a .sub file now. What software do I need to use to take the mpg file, add the subtitles to it and create a DVD? What is this process called? I have looked at several softwares and they all seem to need a avi file to start with

.sub as in text file, or .sub as in .sub/.idx?
If the former, convert to .srt, then to .sup with srt2sup
If the latter convert to .sup with sub2sup
Author with IfoEdit (or other authoring app that supports .sup subtitles)

just click on subtitle creator and you will see what tools you can author to a dvd with...

you can also author with dvdauthorgui, muxman,dvd-lab pro, ulead dvd workshop...they all support subs, most text subs then.

  4. Thanks! I have the text subtitle file modified but I am having a problem getting the video file to be accepted by almost any of the freebies mentioned in the last posting. The video file was created by TPMGEnc I think it is an MPG file but I get different kinds of error messages depending on which program I am using. DVDAuthorGUI error message says that "NAV packets are not found in the file". Muxman just refused to recognize it period, won't open it. So close...but yet so far!

  5. Demultiplex your mpg file (projectx, tmpgenc mpeg tools...) and use the elementary video and audio streams with the 'freebies'

  6. Hi,
I have all the files separated now and put them back together with muxman and DVDauthorgui. They both run flawlessly but neither produces results with subtitles. I am using powerdvd to view the results. I have read the text files produced as the programs work and see no errors. I have redone it several times. Any suggestions?

  7. I don't know PowerDVD very well, but usually the subtitles do not show up automatically. You have to select them. In WinDVD you would need to click on the 'movie' during playback with the right mouse button and select 'Subtitles' and activate 'Subtitle 1' or 'Subtitle 2' or...
    By default subtitles are deactivated...

  8. Thanks! I have looked at the menu option to display subtitles but it is not an option - it is grayed out - using 2 different dvd players.

I know there is potentially one problem. When I was preparing the video file I used tmpgenc and made the video file fit only 60% of the screen. The rest of the screen is black, and I know the subtitles are also black. So, I think now I have 2 problems.

    1. The subtitles do not seem to be there. I remuxed the files and put the subtitles in the center of the screen (where they would be right on top of the audio and should show up)- they still do not show up.
    2. Even if they were there the text is black and they are showing on a black background. They would be invisible!

    Help!

  9. The 'color problem' can be solved easily with DVDSubEdit

But if the subs are not in the vobs, we need a little bit more info...

    1. In which format do you have the subtitels now? (if unsure, post some lines)
    2. Which progran did you use for multiplexing (authoring) the vob files?
    3. It would be helpful (for me) if you would use (my) GUI for dvdauthor or dvdauthorgui for authoring and post the log file somewhere...

  10. Are you sure you demuxed the audio and video, had DVDauthorGui load the video, (audio loads automatically if same name), then specified the subtitle file and created the DVD?

I am confused by your statement of "putting them back together". You do not do that. The prog requires two, or with subtitles three, seperate files which are seperately specified, except as noted with audio.

Also confused by you putting the subtitles right on top of the Audio? Assuming you meant Video?

To answer another question, the subtitles are NOT part of the MPG file. They are played together when placed on a properly authored DVD. It is the authoring stage where the subtitles are placed on the DVD as an option.

Great prog Borax, BTW. But referencing paragraph 2 above, why not auto-load a subtitle file with the same name as video? And put an egg in my beer while you're at it.

  11. Thanks! I have been "playing with" multimedia for the past year or so but have never had the pleasure of doing the same thing twice

To prepare the video file I used TMPGEnc and limited the video to 60% of the screen (the original source was a VCD). I now have a file called interviewv (v for video) and interviews (s for sound) and interview srt format.srt for the subtitles. I have used both muxman and dvdauthorgui to mux them. In both cases I had no subtitles I even tried placing the subtitles in the middle of the screen to eliminate the problem of black print on a black background but still got no subtitles.

Below is a listing of the log of dvdauthorgui:

I must say, the tools that I am working with seem to be very well designed - I am impressed with them. Now...to become knowledgeable enough to use them properly....

  12. If you load the file in Subtitle Workshop, it will auto-load the video (you will have to rename the file to the same name prefix) and this will allow you to preview the video with subs. Can change colors, also.

The log file looks basically correct, by that I mean no errors and a valid subtitle file were found.

Have you tried burning an RW disk and testing in a standalone player? It is possible the software is not recognizing the subs, though unlikely.

As mats.hogberg posted, the format of the subs, whether graphical or text is important. Some DVD authoring programs, like muxman, will only accept the rendered (graphical .sup) subs. Some like DVDA use text only. As Baldrick posted, subtitle creator can handle it, render the subs to the sup format muxman (& AFAIK DVD Author GUI) requires. You don't have the option to display subs in PowerDVD because the DVD rightly tells the player it doesn't contain any.

  14. DVDauthor will accept SRT format subtitles, I have made several.

Do the preview in subtitle workshop and post results.

  15. Thanks! Eureka! When I preview the project using subtitle workshop I have subtitles! They are white, displayed down on the bottom of the black area where I requested them to be. The only problem is that the video is has a strong blueish green tint, something that was not in the video before when I was using subtitle workshop to place the titles.

When I burn the files to a dvd I have been under the impression that all I have to do is include the audio ts and video ts folders. Do I have to first copy the subtitle file to the video ts file?

    Close...very close.....but I still can't get a disk burnt with subtitles...

  16. As I mentioned previously, you must specifically identify the subtitle file in the DVD authoring program. It is not included nor is it part of any of the other files or sections of the video. It is built-in by the authoring program, but ONLY if you tell the authoring prog what subtitle file to use.

  17. Just remembered your log does show a subtitle file included, in SUB format. There is one warning at the end, the meaning of which I do not know. Try the SRT format, Workshop will convert, this has always worked for me. Try this on a standalone player and make sure to turn subtitles on.

    If it helps...

"DVDauthor will accept SRT format subtitles"
Nelson37 is correct, looking it up DVDAuthor uses spumux to handle them.

    https://www.videohelp.com/~liquid217/dlfiles85/readme.html
    http://dvdauthor.sourceforge.net/doc/spumux.html

Might provide some hints -- according to the bottom linked page: "If processing textbased subtitles no other streams can be defined" Docs for both the GUI & main prog. talk about limited sub features -- don't know if any apply to your project.

If all else fails, create sup files & use muxman, ifoedit etc...?

  19. Clarify - I thought you were asking about authoring, not burning. Once the file is authored, then yes, it IS included in the TS directory structure, not really sure where. There is no extra step required, just burn the directories as usual.

On the Workshop preview, white may be the default color, try a color change and see if it shows up in preview. You may still have the black subtitles which are there but invisible.

Within the vob files. Subtitles are multiplexed within the mpeg (vob) just like video and audio streams.
The log from dvdauthorgui looks absolutely correct. The warning: ' WARN: Read 0, expected 4' is normal for 'usual' subs, more are usually only used for menus.

To do some error tracking, try to view your final result (DVD folder) with another soft player (VLC or MPC are great to check subs).

  21. Yikes! I am now in the situation where I can use the subtitle workshop and watch the video and see the subtitles but still, after muxing, cannot see the subtitles.

Is there any muxing software that I can use that will allow me to directly use the file from subtitle workshop without having to use the srt2sup? There are sooooo many options and settings in these programs. I would like to be able to remove one step to see if that will help.

This is the first time I have used muxman, DVDAuthorGUI and subtitle workshop. When I installed the programs I did not install any other filters. Do I need to?

Sooooooooo close...but yet sooooo faaaaaaaarrrrr .....

  22. There is NO NEED to convert the SRT file for DVDAuthorGUI. It will accept the SRT file. That is one process you can eliminate.

Wild guess - bitrate is near the maximum allowed. Try perhaps a short test file with a lower bitrate?

Have you tried playback on a standalone DVD player?

  24. The standalone video player also doesn't show subtitles

  25. And the (mentioned) soft players ( VLC / MPC )?
    Quote Quote
  26. You keep mentioning muxing.

Are you certain you are simply specifying seperate video, audio, and SRT files to DVDAuthorGui? The prog muxes them, you do not need to perform that step.

  27. Sorry! By muxing I meant using DVDAuthorGUI to put the sound, video and subs together. I just checked a disk I burned and found it works! It has subtitles on both VLC and PowerDVD! Now...I just have to remember which settings I used to make it work! Any suggestions on how to remember?
