  1. Ok here's the deal: I encoded a movie in VCD format (for some weird reason) using TMPGEnc. For my first rip, the result was good, but I'm thinking if I should re-encode the whole film in SVCD format. What are the benefits? Would you do it, or wouldn't you really bother?

    Thanks.

Start with dvd again, if you want SVCD. VCD to SVCD is useless, because you lost the quality alreaddy.

  3. Yep, that is what I was planning to do - start with the DVD again, but I'm asking if there's any point. Will I notice a huge difference between VCD and SVCD?

SVCD looks better than VCD, because a higher picture resolution is used, 480x480/576 instead of 352x240/288. So the picture is more detailed, clearer, sharper or how ever you want to call it. Higher resolution usually requires a higher video bitrate as well, so the file size get larger.

  5. keep in mind SVCD has better compression than VCD...so SVCD gives you "more bang for your buck"..in terms of file size
