How to change the System Default Sound Device or ?

I get no sound on any of media player Windows Media Player, CyberLink PowerDVD, Creative PlayCenter, Nero ETC, when trying to play an avi file. I have gotten Media Player Classic to work by changing from system default sound device to SB Audigy Audio [9000] (00200000) and it now works fine, How does one change the system Default Sound Device. I have windows XP PRO with SP2 installed. Below is a copy of the error message that Media Player Classic would repot before I changed the preferred audio device

For WMP you can try to override using options -> devices tab. For mine it is only the default (as set in the previous step) or my SB Live! (which is also the default . . . . . )

For PowerDVD 5 there doesn't appear to be a way to use anything else.

Using MPC may be misleading, as I believe it uses it's own codec, like VLC, in some instances. So it may simply be bypassing the problems that other players are having.

The most likely cause is a missing codec, so start by using the latest version of g-spot to determine what audio is in the avi files, and what codecs you need.

I guess so. Surprised you aren't having prob. at that end yet, especially with Ligos installed.

All my personal opinion & FWIW & all that... If I understand correctly, installed other codecs after prob surfaced... I'd start troubleshooting by trying to play just wav & midi files in wmplayer. Especially if no midi, I'd consider removing creative stuff & reinstall -- it often has to be a complete removal, see driverheaven forums for tools & tips. Have brand new drivers out anyway that may apply to your card, so perhaps maintenance anyway. Reinstalling latest wmplayer should I think restore default codec settings.

To determine if interferance from other codecs, DXman might help to locate actual files -- need to rename files or folders containing files to temporarily turn them off, but IMO this is usually just necessary with video, particularly mpg2.

I can play audio files with no problem. As for all the installed codec’s I have removed all and added one at a time in an attempt to repair this problem with no success. If you think this might be the difficulty, could you provide me a listing of the essential codec’s that would be necessary for playback?

If you can play wav & midi by themselves without prob., just not when muxed in avi container, something might be wrong with the file splitting part of the chain, where the avi file gets taken apart for decoding. If so, reinstall of latest wmplayer might help. THere are certain files in windows however that could have been overwritten, & aside from comparring with backup, or comparring to another machine, don't know any easy solutions.

Add/remove programs in control panel (if it lists them) is the easiest way to remove codecs. Renaming the files or folders for a codec works -- AnalogX DXMan helps locating files. Ligos can in my experience be a real bear to get rid of -- hangs on in the registry -- to get rid of a Roxio version of Ligos had to 1st break the codec by replacing files with incompatible versions! I've personally used Windiff or Winmatch or Powerdesk to help compare current files to those in a backup to restore files/file versions overwritten by software or damaged.

Would there be a benefit -- I don't honestly know. I've gone thru this sort of thing for other video problems and been successful more then I've failed, but, I've never known until I tried.

DXman show several Windows Media as not existing but RadLight shows that they exist and they are in the windows system32 folder. I am going to try to upload a screen shot but have been unsuccessful so far. Hope this might produce a fix for my problem.

The DMO stuff (& one or two other controls) won't show a file. The 2 xeb files are extra to windows XP (might want to check what they go to), you don't show the WMVideo 8 Decoder DMO (may be nothing to worry about), the ctw.... file I think *might* be from the older set of creative drivers, otherwise the part you show is the same as what I've got if that helps.

I would like to thank, guns1inger and mikiem who offered there aid on this, I would like to be able to tell every one how it was fixed but I don’t know which action that I did was responsible as I tried many different things, CCleaner, K-Lite, Direct Show Filter Manager, RadLight, and MMCompView to name a few.
