This is from a VHS capture of an old tape. It's a commercial but I see this in the programming. I am pretty sure this wasn't there back when I recorded this I haven't played the tape in at least five or six years....

I did some searching and couldn't find any obvious avisynth or virtualdub filter that would be effective in dealing with this. Should I just call it quits or is there some magical solution I haven't stumbled across?

  2. TMPGenc has an ghost reduction setting that can help. Look under advanced for the ghost setting.

  3. IF all else fails and you have some spare cash, consider looking at the hardware filters listed in this forum. The "Proc Amp Guide" has a link to SignVideo's Proc Amp Page -- they sell both single and dual-model Proc Amps; the dual being two single Proc Amps stacked into one. SignVideo is reportedly the same group that was originally Vidicraft and their stuff is supposedly top-notch.

Navigate through that SignVideo site to the section that lists their Proc Amps and Detailers. You don't **need** a Proc Amp if you don't have one, but it could help in some areas, ditto for the detailer. What caught my eye though is a little "VHS Filter" that supposedly does some Y/C shifting and removes VHS Falloff (Ghosting) -- this sucker is a few hundred dollars, but I'd like to know if anyone's used it with success. It looks like it could fix this guy's tape as well as a few of my own. While I intend to purchase one of these units in the future, I don't have the money at present. The thing is SignVideo is supposedly a great company and if their past work at Vidicraft is any indication than they definitely would qualify. The little box that'll fix your ghosting issue may be a bit expensive, but it could save you a major headache in the future and I've yet to see anything else like it mentioned in these forums. Consider a TBC as well as the VHS Y/C filter -- you could benefit from both a TBC and a DNR on that tape as well if you can afford it. If not, try looking for that Y/C filter on the signvideo page.

I hope this helps, again, this is after the software filtering fails. The biggest issue I have is removing VHS Falloff (ghosting) and this little box looks like the thing to do it, but I've yet to experiment with it; it sounds like what you need though.
