  1. (Sorry, I don't know where to post this. I did a search for Video and audio out of sync, but it didn't give me a option to post in that section unless I wanted to post in someones thread. I found a lot of information but I'm unsure of where to start.)

I have some Video avi files that I want to make a DVD out of in Pinnacle Studio 8. When I play these files in Studio 8 the audio and video are out of sync. When I play them in Windows media player there is no problem, they are normal in sync. I used a software called GSpot and this is the information it gave me:

    VIDEO

    4CC: YUY2
    NAME: YUV PACKED 4:2:2
    STAT: NO CODEC NEEDED
    RUNTIME:00:05:33 (9,985 fr)
    XY:352x240 (1.47:1) [=22:15]
    BITRATE:24268 kb/s
    FPS:29.971
    QF:9.585 bits/pixel

    AUDIO

    NAME: PCM Audio
    STAT:PCM:NO CODEC REQUIRED
    BITRATE:1411 kb/s (705/ch, stereo)
    FS:44100 Hz

    STREAM TYPE A/V INTERLEAVE

    TYPE: OpenDML AVI
    IMRR:N.S
    I/L: NOT SUPPORTED

    Does name indicate the codec?

What is my first step into resolving this problem?

Two main kinds of sync problems. In one the audio is out of sync the same amount for the length of the video. This means the start point of one or the other needs to be offset.

In the second kind the audio gradually drifts out of sync and is worse at the end. That usually means the video or audio is different lengths.

So you add or subtract a offset or you change the length of one or the other. Unfortunately, you need to know exactly how much of a change is needed. And just to make it complicated, the video may have errors and have some combination of both problems.

You change the length of one of the files in a audio or video editor.
You can add the offset in either, too.

I would drop it into VirtualDub Mod and check the length of the video/audio and check for errors in the file. You can change the offset in VDMod and the audio length in Audacity, both freeware.

    There is also this guide:

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/140540.php

That should get you started, and you can do a forum search for 'sync problems' and get a few hundred posts on the subject.

  3. OK, I used VitualDubmob to scan for errors and here is the result:

0 frames masked (0 frames bad, frames good but undecodable)

And here is the stream report:

    ----------Video Stream---------------
    -Source: [input AVI file]
    -Description:AVI video stream
    -Length: 00:02:18:547

    ----------Other Stream--------------
    -Source: [input AVI file]
-Description: AVI Audio Stream 1 [tag 0x0001, Microsoft PCM format]
    -Length: 00:02:19:078

So there is a difference of 0.531 between the video and audio streams. This video is out of sync right away. It dosen't gradually become out of sync. So well the link you gave me still help?

Also how do you change the offset in vdmod? And what does it mean to change the offset?

Go to Streams -> Stream List. Right-click on the audio stream and select Interleaving. Here you can add a delay (can be + or -) and them preview before saving. Make sure audio and video are both set to Direct Stream Copy before saving.

  5. Ok, I followed your instructions. The only thing I changed was the audio skew correction because the audio was lagging the video. Was I supposed to play with the interleaving options? I found no reason to do that in the help files. I set the video and audio direct stream copy and saved it.

Now I'm using Studio 8 to make the DVD. The video and audio is generaly good however, in some parts of the video it seems like the video pauses for a brief moment so that the audio can catch up. But this is in Pinnacle Studio 8. Is this a side effect of the method you have shown me or do you think it may be Pinnacle or my computer? I have 1 GB of RAM. The video is fine when viewing in VirtualDubMod.
