I have recorded a mpg (Mpeg 2) file off a VCR and the audio is mono. How do I change it to stereo sound?

    Thanks.

    Hi Zoist,

In short, you can't - not real stereo.

If you're only getting sound out of one speaker, you can copy that track into the other channel so that the same sound is coming out of both speakers.

This is simply a copy and paste job in any audio editor. Audacity is free, easy to figure out and will easily do what you want to do.

Seen the forecast for the weekend?

I recorded it from a mono tape, and I realise that it isn't going to be true stereo. I just wanted to make the sound come out of the left and right speakers not just one.

It's a video mpg file not a audio file. I did try it with my Audacity but it crashed. Is there a video editor I could use to change it into stereo?

Thanks for that. I changed it to 2 channels and saved the video files audio to an mp3. How can I overwrite the audio with my mpg video file with the mp3 file I saved?

Where will the MPG (with MP3) be viewed? Just on a PC, or are you looking to creat a DVD from it to watch on TV?

If it's the latter, MP3 audio isn't within the DVD spec and is highly unlikely to play on any DVD player. The only valid audio formats are: AC3, WAV and MP2 (PAL regions only - which you are).

As for muxing audio (of any format) with an MPG - I'm not sure.

Yes it was going to be watched on a DVD on the TV. Just not sure how to bring the new audio and video together as one.

You'll need one of the three audio formats I mentioned above. Goldwave can output WAV, and may do MP2 though I'm not sure.

For MP2 and AC3, get a WAV file and encode to either using ffmpeggui. A bitrate of 224 for either will be OK.

Do a number of searches around various combinations of the words: muxing, mux, multiplex, multiplexing, audio, m2v, MPG, AC3, mp2, WAV

    Good luck.
