    This is stupid.......

Hello, is there a way to make a VCD with a resolution of 1150bitrate AVI(DivX)
I compared the VCD with the AVI (1150bitrate) but the AVI looks much more nicer when it comes to quality, there's very very few block noise, very very few little spots, smooth graphics, but both of them is 1150bitrate right? How come the AVI is so much nicer? Well, just want to know if it's possible. I see some VCD (VCD! not SVCD)with superhigh quality looks (very few block noise, spots, etc. it's even great in high motion), I'm just wondering how to do that. Thanks very much.

BTW is there a way to use external codec when making a VCD? (Like using DivX on VCD [VCD compressed by DivX is what I mean]), I don't know about this but if it's possible can someone help me.

    Bye Bye

  2. You can convert DivX movies to MPEG using TMPGEnc. I always rip my DVD's to DIvX for other uses, then convert them to MPEG for VCD

IMHO, I think DivX2[S]VCD have better quality than straight DVD rips to [s]vcd.

I don't think any DVD players can read the DivX codec.

  3. There is no such thing as VCD encoded by DivX, VCD uses MPEG1 compression, and that's it! DivX is MPEG4 hack, it is a newer method and it cannot be used for VCD!

Ahhh.... Excuse me, but I wan't to know if it's possible to make a VCD with DivX Quality (352x240), I made an AVI (DivX compressed) file with 1150bps (same as VCD) but the AVI file is much nicer compared to VCD one.

Btw, what are the supported formats of a VCD Player (not DVD) except for 352x240 and 352x288

  5. 1. For VCD standards, check out http://www.vcdhelp.com/vcd.htm.
    2. Divx (MPEG4) compression makes for better quality movies than VCD (MPEG1). This is the advantage of Divx, better quality in smaller filesize, disadvantage is you CANNOT play Divx movies on any DVD player. VCDS, however, on a single 80min cd hold 800 MB, instead of just 700 MB data if you were putting a Divx movie on a cd. So when doing CBR VCD, calculate the bitrate with 800 MB as the final size.

Ooooops. ulr not found on this server. ^_^
    I hit a bad link.

So there's no way a VCD will be as good as DivX if comparing them with the same bitrate? (There's only very little quality lose but it's really bugging me though) Coz for me quality comes first, second is the quantity ratio 6:4 ^_~

    Thanks anyway

  7. what u wanna do it up the bit rate of the vcd (or svcd)
if your encoding from a really good divx source u definately wanna use a higher bitrate than 1150 but since mpeg1 is not as compressed as a divx if u wanna view the vcd in a standalone its gonna be larger than one cd, u gonna have to put it on 2 or more if u want the best quality. use a bitrate calculator on this site and i think u need to do some samples with different bit rates so YOU can see the difference...if u have an excellent source i would use a video bit rate of 2100kbps OR HIGHER.

BUT U ARE GONNA HAVE TO DO SOME SAMPLES SO U CAN SEE FOR YOURSELF THATS THE ONLY WAY U ARE GONNA KNOW EXACTLY WHAT TO DO IN CERTAIN CASES

Well, I once tried 2000bitrate but, the file is huge 250kilobytes per sec. Actually, that's the only way around but it consume to much so I'm digging the net if there's another way around.

  9. DGreater1, a VideoCD Player will ONLY play VCD Standard! it will NOT play anything except the standard it was build on!

Of course Standard VCD Player, will only play standard (except if you did something on your VCD) ^_^

And by the way, I didn't say I hack my VCD ^_~ Hehehe

  13. i actually agree a divx at a 1150 looks better than an mpeg-1 at 1150. unfortunately the issue is no stand alone support. basically the mpeg4 (being newer) is compressed (using serious algorithms) more than mpeg1/2. thats why you need twice as powerful a cpu chip to play a divx at 1150 than a mpeg at 1150.

mpeg-4 has gotten a bad rap at times becuase videos get encoded at 400 kb/s and even if that was equivelant to a 700 kb/s mpeg1 its still has half the bits to work with than a regular vcd (or 800 kb/s divx) at high bitrates mpeg4 does quite nicely.

so answer.. if your dvd player supports it.. goto 1800 bitrate and variable 2-pass (mpeg1)

the variable will help out action scenes and half action scenes with a little boost of bandwidth

  14. Apples and oranges..
Do you remember the day when audio first came to the internet? On a 28.8K connection you could listen to some gurgeling voice that was barely understandable. Today, on a 28.8K connection you can listen to "good" quality music, or very good quality voice!
The same is the case with video. Newer, better and faster compression methods are developed all the time...
