The source avi file size does not matter at all when you are converting to another video format like VCD.
VCD takes about 10MB/minute, read this:
https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/135642.php
You must make xvcd, lower the video or audio bitrate or use 80/90/99min cds. -
If you can overburn, Abond's suggestion is excellent. There should be enough space on an 80 minute CD-R to burn this in overburn mode. Warning - if you are using Roxio, in the past Roxio didn't allow overburning. I don't know if that's still true.
When overburning, use the lowest speed setting you possibly can for the burn. Anything faster than 4X may (or may not) give you a bad burn. -
You can use the KVCD templates for TMPGenc 2.5, if you use it (even the free version works, if you don't need to tackle MPEG-2 files, look http://www.kvcd.net/portal/index.php ). Get the KVCD templates here: http://kvcd.net/dvd-models.html .
The right template is standard PAL/NTSC KVCD 352x288/240, named 'general purpose VCD quality' (avg. 120' per CD).
KVCDs are MPEG-1 video files (M1V) encoded in Constant Quality (CQ) mode, 300-1800 kbps.
Ther are a little difficult to use (the CQ value must be changed an the precision of the decimal pont , e.g. CQ=78.9 - until you reach the full 80' CD-R - approx 835,000,000 bytes - capacity (take into account approximate 10,5 MB needed for authoring, therefore approx 835,000,000 bytes ).
The audio must be added separately with TMPGenc (for a MP2 for KVCD, an encoding 128 kbps is the most appropriate value) with TMPGenc___MPEG Tools___Multiplex (type: Video-CD non standard).
Some application exist to have an approximate idea of the 'ideal' CQ value, so that for a certain movie you have exactly 1 80' CD-R dize.
If you want to try them, PM me your e-mail and I'll send you the applications which need to be used (CQmatic and Calcumatic)...
Please note: evei in this case, if you're allowed overbutning up to 855.000.000 bytes, try to reach that number (it allows a higher value for CQ).
But, provided that AVI movie's length was only a little greater than 80', overburning is the best (and quickest thing to do..). Avoid reading TMPGenc's wizard in that way. On a 80' CD you can fit 2352*360,000 bytes cue/bin image = 846,720,000 bytes, not 700 MB. And a VCD image is approx 10,5 MB larger to the mpeg movie (VCDEasy, VCDGear. Nero NRG images appear smaller, but need more room on the CD, when burned), therefore a 835,000,000 bytes movie can fit on a 700 MB CD-R [80'] . 700 MB is the 'cooked' free room (2048*360,000 bytes), not the 'raw' free room (2352*360,000 bytes) for a 80' CD-R.
Ah, please note: from that wizard, your movie becomes 700 MB * 115,86% = 811,000,000 bytes. In truth, it fits perfectly, A 80' CD-R can contain exactly 83' movie. Author that VCD movie with VCDGear (free) and verify this!
