I have downloaded the Trial version of Mpeg Video Wizard DVD, mainly because of its ability to encode audio to AC3 5.1
Once installed, I then proceeded to Load a music video clip which was AC3 Stereo. I click on Export and change the channels to AC3 5.1
I select DVD, click on Encoder button, and change the Format to AC3,
6 channels, then click OK. I then export the project, and it creates the DVD files.

I then insert the newly created DVD into the home system, and sure enough, the amplifier indicates that the Audio is 5.1 and the blue light comes on indicating multi channel decoding.

BUT.....the sound is only coming from the front speakers, nothing from the rear speakers. I was not expecting true 5.1 sound separation, but at least some sort of pseudo surround sound.

Am I doing something wrong in the process, or am I expected too much from the MVWD with a stereo clip ??

    Thanks in advance

I suspect you are expecting too much. It is probably looking for all 6 channels when that is what you ask for. In your case you have only provided two, so it assumes the rest are empty and encodes from there.

  3. Anything the encoder did to synthesize rear channels would permanently mess up the audio.

Adding rear channel effects from a stereo source is the job of the amp where it can be switched off and on or changed to different effects.

    Hi,
MVW is an excellent program, if I'm not mistaken I think that it only preserves the source file's original AC3 attributes and of course will downmix encode if you so desire, I don't think it will "upmix" to channels that weren't there in the first place. If you wan't to change the audio I think you will need a fairly upscale audio editing program to re-map your audio tracks.

If you want to try to convert stereo to surround here is a good read:

Watching and listening to some of my VideoHits music DVDs, I notice that when the amp is set to Dolby ProLogic II, some tracks do exhibit surround sound quality, while others are definately coming from the front speakers only. What is the difference in these tracks? Why is it that even in Prologic mode, some clips exhibit only front speaker audio?
