I have burned a few DVD-R and DVD-RW with my converted Dell 1100A to 1300 and everything has been fine. Although I mostly use my 3520A simply because it offers faster speeds and Dual Layer capabilities.

The Dell I used to have had a NEC that I x-flashed to NEC 1300. It worked very good for me. A frien of mine had the very same machine with the same drive but his NEC 1100 was never able to -R media. no matter what firmware we used.

I would say the x-flasing will work most of the time, but there will be some unsuported drives out there.

How would you go about doing this? I'd be very interested in getting my 1100A drive to burn -R..... Some instructions would be nice

Plenty of info on flashing bios to upgrade NEC drives with feedback on what works....and what doesn't.

    Greetings,

I did the conversion more than one year ago and it runs without almost any glitch on +-R, +-RW.

The only issue I am having since the conversion is sometimes DVD Decrypter issuing an error msg at the beginning of the burn. The trick is to reboot my computer.

It is unfortunate with +-R because the disc is wasted, but for the +-RW I don't lose the disc.

    Thank you

Thanks for the info - I flashed mine and now it just burnt a -R with no problams. I'm going to pick up some -RWs and see how they work, but I mainly wanted the -R ability, so I'm happy Just saved me some money since I don't have to go buy a new +/- burner
