    Hi,
After my motherboard failed, i rebuilt on a different board, and had to install windows ME (as my 'xp restore disk' would not allow installation on the new board) I installed Powerdvd 6 as the default player, which mostly works ok, (but doesn't play everything anymore..)
When i look in 'my computer at the 'properties' of both my CDwriter and DVDwriter drives, it refers to them both as simply 'compact disc' and file system 'RAW' it doesn't mention a DVD region. In device manager, it recognises both drives make and model, but again no mention of region code.
My usual method of dvd backup, is using DVDshrink/DVDdecrypter, which worked perfectly with xp. But a trial attempt with my current setup, wouldn't play in Powerdvd (although all my previous 'XP' discs play fine)
All motherboard drivers are installed. Neither drive, came with installation software, and both worked fine 'out of the box' with xp..
I'm obviously missing something that i need.
My full system details are in my profile....Thanks
GO FROM ME SUMMER FRIENDS AND TARRY NOT

PowerDVD by default is dvd (mpeg2) file playing software. If you are having trouble with avi files, for instance, it is because you do not have the proper codecs installed.

As for the device description, XP and 98/ME have different ways of naming devices/drives. It's been so long since I've used 98 that I don't recall where the region code information was stored, I seem to recall the player software displaying the region code or using drive tools like Nero speed.

Your ripping issue could be related to file size and disc format limitations (Fat 32 as compared to NTFS), especially if you are working with dvd images (over 4 gig).
