Has anyone tried to hook an amp up to a capture device to record like a guitar solo or something. I am afraid that i could overload the device and then blow it.

Think there's a bunch of devices, some inexpensive designed to go between guitar & line-in. Think you should also be able to use some mixers, & micing your amp has been popular enough that devices & software have been developed to imitate it. Check out what they've got over at musiciansfriend.com

You can't beat having one of these small mixers next to the computer. The Eurorack is a cheaper knockoff of the famous Mackie design.
