Well my almost 2 yr. old 642 is giving me the NO Disc death rattle and won't even spin up now.

I now need a new player that can at the least play Xvid/Divx stuff, has decent DVD playback quality and is region hackable.

Any suggestions for a machine available in the US for not a bunch of money?

If I were really dreaming it would also be able to play back Xvid at HDTV resolutions, accept Nero Digital files, upscale SD sources to 1080i/p and have an HDNI out. These aren't mandatory at this point though. Right now we just need a player to watch Xvid TV rips on.

    Thanks for any advice,
    Mike

I upgraded to the Oppo OPDV971H. Very nice player, very highly rated, does upscaling, and is fully Divx Pro certified (which includes GMC and QPEL). http://www.oppodigital.com

There are currently no players that support HDTV xvid playback.

The I-O Data LinkPlayer can do DivX/Xvid at HDTV res (there also may be other players I'm forgetting), but it's about $250, which sounds like more than he wants to spend at this point.
