I hope this is the correct forum. I've done quite a bit of searching so this may not exist but I thought I'd ask.

I'm looking for a program that will batch encode a group of divx/xvid files to a specified size. Unlike Auto GK which does this on a per file basis, I would like this hypothetical program to take a group of files and figure out how best to encode them so that they all fit onto a disc but each maintains as much quality as possible.

To clarify, I'll give an example of what I want to do. I have a complete 1st season of a TV show plus a bunch of extras (interviews, deleted scenes, etc.), all in divx format, and I would like to burn it all on one data DVD-R. The episodes take up a little under 3.8 gigs. The extras, as they are currently encoded, take up just a bit over a gig. I don't want to re-encode the show but I don't mind some quality loss on the extras. There are about 20 files ranging from under a minute to about 20 minutes. It would be a huge drag to use a bitrate calculator to figure out what size each should be and then enter all that into AGK one at a time.

If, instead, I could dump all the files into some program and tell it to fit them all into 700 MB (or whatever space is left on the DVD), that would be amazing. If I could also select an audio bitrate, etc... Really, just like AGK but for a bunch of files.

I've also had the frustrating experience of a group of files I want to fit on a disc being just a few MBs too large. That would be another great use for such a program as there would be very little quality loss per file if it was done intelligently.

I'm no programmer so I don't know how complicated what I'm asking would be to actually implement. Is this a realistic thought at all? Is there already a tool that will do this? Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

  2. If you're looking to convert to a dvd compliant format, I suggest WinDVD Creator. Not many variables, so it's not really suited for "pro" use, but very simple and quick if you're trying to jam a lot onto a disc with good quality.

If you're trying to keep everything as xvid or divx, I don't know how to batch encode to a specific size.

I'm keeping them divx/xvid and burning data DVDs.

I've found a semi-solution, if anyone who read this is curious. It's not exactly what I was looking for but it gets the job done okay.

First, I load all of the clips I want to re-encode into a playlist (I use Winamp for this because it's quick and it gives me the total length of the playlist immediately) and I note the total length of the playlist. Then I enter that length into a bitrate calculator. For file size I enter the amount of space left on the disc. Then I choose an audio bitrate. Then it gives me a video bitrate.

I take that video bitrate along with the audio bitrate I entered and encode all of the clips at those settings. To encode, I found a GUI called Super (https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=SUPER_1) that batch encodes several files all at the same video and audio bitrates.
