  1. I am having problems playing mpeg-2 files with Windows Media Player. I downloaded and ran the Windows Media codec check utility and it found a mpeg-2 codec, Cyberlink Video codec. Still, whenever I try to play an mpeg-2 file the media player gives me an error. I can play it fine with VLC, but still confused on why it will not play with media player. Any help would be appreciated.

  2. Thanks for the reply. I understand that I can use other software to play the mpeg-2 files, but I am still perplexed WHY Media Player will not play the files when the media player check utility spots an mpeg-2 codec. Would still be interested in an answer or thoughts if anyone has any ideas on the topic.

Well, if I'd be perplexed for every file format WMP is supposed to play, and nevertheless fails at, I think I'd be frozen for all eternity! Actually, my WMP doesn't play anything at all - Just dies with some "tells me nothing" error message. Only problem with that, is that I still have a (constantly dwindling) # of file types associated with WMP, but luckily very few now!

    Also, its erratic
On one machine with XP here Media Player(ver 10) will not play MPEG-2 despite Power DVD's presence (VER 5.0)(says opening file forever instead)
On another machine with 2000 and WMP 9, Playback for MPEG-2 with POWERDVD's presence is fully functional!
    Go figgure
