  1. Hello!
When I use "Gordian Knot" to convert a file to .avi and VirtualDub starts why does this take sow long time?

I use the standard First - and Secound Pass (xvid), is there any way that this can go any faster?
Maybe change something in first and secound pass?
I have AMD 64 3200+ and get max 40 fps..
    please help me

It's a fairly complex conversion. If you add filters, it goes even slower. What I would advise is to make up a 5 minute clip of a representative part of your video. Try some different settings. A single pass will obviously be faster, but less quality.

Decide what quality VS time to encode you want and stick with it. It's all in the codec settings. What program you use to run the codec isn't that important. If you are using Divx, try Xvid. Some people think it's faster.

  3. Hi-

Your speed sounds normal to me for your computer. One important thing affecting the encoding speed is your chosen resolution. The lower the res, the faster the encode. Encoding at 640x480 will go much slower than will encoding to 512x384. The more pixels to encode, the longer it will take.

And as redwudz said, filtering also slows the conversion.

    What were you expecting? Supersonic?

Pick a simpler codec, lower the bit-rate, convert less stuff (chop off more time), add more black borders around the stuff so it encodes less, etc.

...or do a CQ or CBR one pass encode. What's the rush?

CQ=Constant Quality. You set the quality factor, and off it goes, keeping every picture that quality. The bad part is that you've got no way of telling how big the resulting AVI will be.
CBR (=Constant Bitrate)/One pass encodes at a constant bitrate regardless if the image needs more or less. 1/2 the time of a 2-pass encode, predictable output size, but generally not as good quality as a 2 pass with the same output size.
