  1. DVD+RDL is not the same as DVD 9, this much I know. What I am asking is, if I simply have a video_TS folder (from a DVD 9 disc), what is stopping me from burning the folder in DVD+R DL? I didnt think the DRM would apple in this scenario because id be using Dual layer, the the DRM info would be passed right along with all the other data I'd be burning.

After the DVD rip would the copy protection on disc get me in this instance? The only reason I ask is because id really not like to use DVD shrink if I dont have to.

I aquired a TS folder using MacTheRipper, if I then go to burn this in a program like Toast, would I have any problems? Yes, I'm using a mac but I'm farmiliar with windows and can use it if need be.

Also, do you lose a noticable amount of quality when you compress to fit on a single layer DVD disc? Im debating weather I want to buy a dual layer writer drive, or if its even worth it.
    I heart my Mac.

DVD9 - Commercial DVD Dual Layer
DVD+RDL - Recordable Dual Layer Disc.

DRM does not apply to DVDs (and it cant since otherwise it would be playablt in standalone dvd players)

Use DVD Decrypter ISO Read, then ISO Write to DL Disc.

If needed to compress for burning to single layer DVDR, this depends on a number of factors. Do you want to backup the whole disc ot main movie only. Compression ratios will vary from DVD to DVD. What size screen will you be watching it on. You will notice more quality loss on larger screens.

Okay, I read what you said about using DVD decrypter, but since DRM is not applicable, (or whatever copy protection) what exactly would stop me from just having one of my burning programs burn from the video_TS folder. Why isn't this the normal method since it would be a complete copy of all data on the original DVD, with no compression attempts and not even encoded, merely ripped data and burnt data???

I really hafta use DVD Decrypter and then burn an ISO? (any burning method i assume)

You will still have to decrypt the disc first, otherwise it won't burn properly. You can't do a 1 to 1 copy of an encrypted disc without removing the encryption first. It just won't work.

DVDs are encryped with CSS encyption. Hence, the need to decrypt them (remove CSS).

If you want to do direct burn to DVD to DVDR without ripping it first, you can use AnyDVD which makes the DVD appear decrypted and without protection.
