Hello All,
I have run into a strange problem that i can't seem to figure out. My parents recently got DSL through Verizon. I went by to set it up for them and noticed that instead of sending the Wireless Router/Modem they just sent the DSL modem. I went ahead and set it up through them by going through the cd which sets up the "dialer" and their dsl worked fine. I decided that I was going to come back later and install a Wirless modem/router and program the router with the name/password (pppoe) so they would have an "always on" connection and my sisters could use the wirless with noone having to install that verizon software (this is how i have it set up at my house).
Here is the problem. My dad has a Windows 2000 pro machine and I simply can not get it to "see" the wireless modem. This is the exact same model as I have at home with the same dsl service so that isn't the problem. It will not even ping the modem ip (192.168.1.1). I had to log into and configure it wirelessly from my sisters laptop. So! Once I get it set up she can connect wirelessly to the internet with no issues but my dad's pc which is hard-wired cannot. I know there isn't a problem with the NIC/cable cause he's able to get on fine with the regular DSL modem and software dialer.
I also brought over a regular xp desktop and hooked it in..it works flawlessly with no software or anything. So my guess is there is something this Windows 2000 machine is lacking that XP has that makes it just that easy to hook up and work. The TCP/IP Protocol is installed.
As I write this I'm struggling to remember if I may have disabled some networking services long ago thinking that my dad would never use them...ack! If this is the case then I'm sorry to have bothered you. If there is something else though that you may be able to suggest please let me know. I have updated it to SP4 so it should be pretty current on it's features.
thanks
